The c series pre war 1911's are in my opinion the best belly guns ever produced anywhere.
Allow me to nitpick (a term from the World War) and repeat myself a bit.

There really is no such thing as a "commercial" 1911" or "commercial 1911A1." The 1911s ("Model of 1911. U.S. Army" or "Model of 1911. U.S. Navy") and 1911A1s were pistols made for the use of the United States Military by Colt's and a number of other manufacturers.

The .45 pistols made for commercial sale by Colt's, starting in 1912 with serial number C1, were named "Government Models." They all had the "C" in the serial number, either as a prefix or suffix, until 1970.

To confuse things even further, there were no pre-war 1911A1s or Government Models in .38 Super. There was, however, Colt's "Super .38 Automatic Pistol," a separate entity which the ads of the day claimed was "built on the same frame as the famous .45 Government Model Automatic." Serial numbers started at 1 in 1929.

And as you mentioned, I have a Government Model that I sometimes rely on to do what it could do 93 years ago without a second thought.

Sig Sauer P232 (.380) LOVE this gun! I added a set of Nill Grips($130!!)and it`s been worth every penny in how the pistol fits my grip and feels/points(not to mention making her look even more elegant and sexy).

I really envy you folks that live in more 2nd amendmant-friendly states. It`s getting scary here in the People`s Republik of Kalifornia.:(

Shot enough most firearms will wear out. Some components can be replaced and others improved thru good gunsmithing techniques to bring a weapon back to good use Some failures are catastrophic and can not be remedied. Most 45's can be refurbished with a little care and knowhow, but some cannot.

I have a P230 (which is pretty much the same gun, don't even know the difference between the 230 and the 232) and love it. I think is a beautiful little gun. I didn't know anyone was even making grips for this gun so thank you for the heads up!

Great little collection you're starting there, keep your gun control crazies at bay there in California!

Thanks,Atomic. Any differences between the P230 and the P232 are probably minor internal tweakings.Mine is the SL model so she`s got a nice solid feel in
the hand.Everyone who sees this gun loves it(especially females).I picked my Sig over the PPK and don`t regret it at all.

All the rave reviews and praise on assorted gun forums made me curious.
I got the stipled and lacquered replacement style grips sans thumb rest as this was my one of my carry guns. Here`s the details:

http://www.nill-shop.com/product_info.php?products_id=394

At least they have`nt gone up in price since I got mine,eh?

Don`t get to the range anywhere near as much as I`d like these days. :(

Based on the action over at SCOTUS today, you'll be (re-)joining us soon. DC was using CA's list and that got shut down quick. :eusa_clap

I like the Walther, that was a good importer call. It allows vintage gun enthusiasts to fill out the stable of WWII handguns for a lot less money.

Well, I guess Warbird is off into the wild blue, any of you other double gun guys are welcome to chime in on my queries about the NID.[huh]

I have never owned an Ithaca but I own a few Parkers and LC Smiths. Buggered screws are usually easy to fix by either replacing them or having the slots widened. Pretty simple, pretty easy. Lose forends and the wiggle you describe sound a little more sinister. I don't think shooting heavy loads is enough to shoot the gun lose, by itself. Those problems tend to stem from a lot of use and from slamming the action shut.

Like I said, I have never owned an Ithaca and thats primarily because they just don't move me. But if I came across a Parker or Smith in the condition you described I would probably walk away unless 1.) the gun was being offered at a tremendous value (i.e. a fraction of what the value of the shotgun would be after the repairs were made); or, 2.) it's a rare bird in high condition; and, 3.) the gun is a 20 ga or 28 ga.

Just my $.02.

Sorry for the delay in my response, I have been traveling. As DG said, the forend could be an issue to be dealt with. There is some play in Ithaca guns, though it shouldn't be that noticeable if you grab it and pull a bit. I've never shaken mine tremendously hard, so I don't know about that. Whether it is worthwhile to have someone look at it I don't know. I don't recall you saying what grade it is.

Try contacting a fellow I know, Walt Snyder. Last I knew the below email was still the easiest way to contact him if it hasn't changed. Walt wrote the book, literally, on Ithaca shotguns. I really enjoy mine and have found them to be every bit as tough any other of the classic vintage American shotgun.

Thanks a lot Gents.

Reason I ended up with it is that I only had to let loose of 100 samoleans.

Yea, screws no biggy, just always worries me a bit as I wonder why they were gone at in the first place.

As I said, the off the face thing is slight and I'm sure wouldn't be there if the lump fit the water table recess more tightly. That's why I was wondering if the problem is just endemic to the design. Sounds like maybe so.

The loose forend is the biggest enigma, think from what you guys say I'll hump it down south to a good gunsmith I know, see what he thinks. Would have been nice if there was just some trick to it I could fix myself.

Think I'll also try an email to the Ithaca guy you linked WB, see if I get any joy there.

Just in passing, I also just found a nice old Ugartechea with relief-engraved fences for $180, haven't taken possesion yet, but aside from cosmetic iffy's, sounds like it's sound.

I'm lucky in that around my neck of the woods it's mostly rifle country and good deals on doubles are fairly frequent.

I'm getting to the point where the deer I dragged out of the woods this fall nearly kilt me, so back to birds and doubles, which are my first love. Shot my first turkey with my Dad's old Belgian 16 down in NM when I was eight.

Oh, and the NID is just a field grade with th early star engravings.

Those grips look great. I had a P230 and want another one.

I've an AR-style collapsible stock on the way. Not a fan of the plain pistol grip.

HERETIC! The screen-used "Vera" was a modified Saiga-12...:p

Seriously, I know a guy who's converting an S12 to a Vera, complete with folding barrel, and he's also putting together a conversion kit for me to build a non-folding version around an S12 of my own...

:D Another fan of the Saiga 'Vera'.

A Saiga 12 was/is my #1 "want" shotty but having looked unsuccessfully for one in my area for several months I gave up and went with the Mossberg.

I'll continue looking for a Saiga in the future...

You have a S12? If so, how do you like it?

Thunder, check out Forum.Saiga-12.com--I'm gonna warn you, it's rather un-FL for it's crude language (a bit of it from me), but it's where the Saiga experts hang. Tell 'em Diamondback sent ya...

In my case, the build is partially because of having a cute Firefly fan-ette I know from an undisclosed forum who I'd very much like to impress.;) (Don't bother askin', you're more likely to successfully extract my liver than an answer.)

Not to worry about the language, I come from ARFCOM. ;)

Sounds like a fun build. Good luck with your build, may it have the desired results.

Figured I'd better post a warning for anybody else who might be interested--some folks in Admin here would pitch a fit about the four-letter-stuff if they poked in without it.

Thanks--Vera's gonna be a while, I have another Saiga build to finish first. (Perhaps you recall me mentioning "Abomination"? If not, PM me and I'll give you an overview.)

Damn you!!!

I have an M1 coming tomorrow and was going to use that line. You suck! =P

(And for the record, she was a Callahan full-bore auto-lock. With customized trigger and double cartridge thorough gauge. Duh.) ;)
