Yep, the good old everyman WW2 #4. Depending on bore condition etc., that'd be about a $250-$300 gun up here in the far frozen, they used to be about $50 but are now bringing more because so many were sporterised. Probably fewer of them down in the lower 48, that might have a bearing. But if I could trade straight across for the Marlin .45, I'd be most pleased.

I'm glad I'm not the only paintball player here, I shoot a Phantom.

It has been several years since I played paintball and would love to get back to it. I was playing just as the semi-autos hit the market, so most people had pumps. I had a Tipmann SL68-II. The Phantom was highly respected back then, and I'm glad to still see it on the market. Great times!

Latest addition, GDR Merkel drilling, 16/16/7x65r, its now my "go-to gun"

For the military guys, I collect militaria of the Algerian War, so maybe some MAS and MABs will appear here

The shotgun is beautiful but the double rifle is stunning. I'm working up the cash to build a 45-70 double rifle for smacking Cape Buffalo. I'd really love a H&H Nitro Express rifle but all of my rich relatives are still very much alive...

2. I'd like to have, close by, the property that would give me the need to carry a scatter gun/rifle.

I must ask though; why scope it? The situation I see myself in is, hunting deer upstate NY while small game is open. Taking what game, big or small, that presents itself. I've seen many drillings scoped, so I'm sure I'm missing something.

Its scoped because of the hunting I do. Here in Hawaii its spot and stalk, and shooting at far distances for big game (unless its pig hunting with dogs and a big knife! ). Hunting without a scope is very, very difficult. Also I use it for stalking in other places as well. 7x65r is a very flat shooting caliber, similar to 280.

However, I hear you about a scopeless drilling for Eastern woods. When I first wanted a drilling I was living on the East Coast and I remain convinced that a light drilling in 7 or 8mm (or even an old one in 9.3x72r) with some 16 (or 20 bore) tubes would be a perfect "whatever you see" gun: deer, grouse, turkeys, etc.

The 45-70 is a poor choice for Cape Buffalo. There are many better choices, especially in double rifle. Not that it couldn't kill one, but there are several choices which put the odds in your favor. And when you speak of dangerous game, which can snuff you out quickly, I like the idea of odds being in my favor.

I will also point out to you one somewhat important fact, hunting cape buffalo in Africa is illegal with a 45-70. You are much better off with the 375 H&H or the 416.

For the military folks, my main military collecting interest is the French war in Algeria, 1954-62. Especially the French colonial or marine troops.

Officer's kit with pre-war MAB D 32ACP pistol (though I must confess its a modern officer's Marine kepi....)

One of the classic battle rifles of that war, and the world in the mid-20th Century, the MAS 49/56!
