It's been a little while since I've posted, but I haven't been completely inactive either. I've been on a little kick lately adding some vintage Stevens .22 rifles to my collection. Here's a later production Model 1894 Favorite I picked up for the princely sum of $40 at an auction. Since the wrist was wrapped with electrical tape I guess the prospect of a potentially broken stock scared people away from it. The stock was cracked and I made some repairs, but I still have to fit a sliver along the bottom tang on the right hand side.

I recently snagged this mystery rifle at an auction for just $70. It is apparently a home brew, as it's a percussion rifle using a boxy action with a horizontal sliding hammer and a cut down barrel from a .45-70 Trapdoor. Notice that it has a Buffington rear sight (which is definitely worth a bit more than I paid for the rifle). That rear sight now resides on my 1884 Trapdoor, and the mystery rifle now wears the Trapdoor's previous rear sight. Since there is no documentation I can find on this rifle, I've just given it the fanciful name of "Wockenfus Slide Hammer" (LOL).

It looks to me that you have yourself a fine example of old skool Gunsmithing. That rifle looks like the creation of some local smith or even a hobbyist wanting to build themselves a rifle with a good supply of hodgepodge parts at hand! Actually such things are quite common. You should have seen some of the concoctions fellas I knew came up with 40-50 years ago. Especially muzzleloaders!

Nearly forty years ago I got into a debate with some New Englander about gun control laws. He held the view that even if they didn't look to work 'we have to try something!' I gave him the fishy eye and said something along the lines the guns are a lot easier to make than he seemed to think and that I was quite sure I could build a working revolver using nothing more than my drill press. My hunting partner agreed, saying something along the lines of "and it would be a fairly good quality gun too, not some crappy zip gun like the thugs put together." Your Wockenfus Slide Hammer would have been an excellent example to prove the point. Well collected, that man!

I did a lot of research on Swiss Army Weapons and there is no mentioning of a "Lange Pistole 08" every being adopted officially. Do you have some more data/pictures? Working with the curator of an arsenal collection we would be highliy interested.
