Nice Max! I think there is something to be said for these non originals. You won't be afraid to take it out and shoot it, since you can't really hurt it, like a pristine original. I regret not building a Chinese Broomhandle in .45 ACP out of parts my friend had. His shot really nice, and he was not afraid to hurt it like I am with my preWWI!

Good job Max!!!!

Ditto Stearman!! There are plenty of good firearms out there that have been altered! Good condition and dang good shooters. Pristine museum examples are nice. And expensive. Makes better sense if you like to shoot, to use a rifle that someone else has already altered.

And I will add. There are many still around out there that would be considered "golden era" alterations. Especially the military rifles and such. Things you would have seen grand pop and great grand pop toting. However these days, these pieces, even in their less than perfect condition are beginning to bring more money. I'm refering to pre WWII stuff. Like Krags, M1903 Springfields, well executed Mauser sporters etc. just have to keep your eyes peeled!

Mine, but not mine at the same time, but I'd still like to share.

Bittersweet post

Received a call from an old friends wife Thursday last. I had known my friend was suffering from acute dementia. And I hadn't seen him since they had to put him in a special home. He was a gun collector from the old school. He started collecting with his dad back in the '30's, in the Red river valley of north Texas.

His wife stated that she had something she needed to give me as it was her husbands wish I have it.

Nice old flint conversion, buck and ball gun by Elwell of Pennsylvania and later Ohio valley. Also known as a smooth rifle.

We would set a talk for hours about his collection. He was no small time collector. Museum grade stuff. As he had ample original guns to survey. His wife stated that he had put my name on this gun 20 years ago! And I was to have it at the right time. I was awestruck!

Like I was just handed the hold grail.

'like' you had been handed the Holy Grail? Actually . . . I think you were. Amazing, really. The working frontiersman's gun, one that he could put deer, duck or grouse on the table when the crops weren't ripe and the larder was running low. Beautiful expression of 'cloth cap' Americana.

And I have done just that, Walter! With both French Fusil de Chasse and Hudson Bay Northwest guns! Deer, pigs, wild turkey, squirrel, rabbits, etc! I think this is why I ended up with this gun. As he new my love for smooth bores. They are a very practical gun. About 10 years ago he gifted me a left hand custom smoothie in 12 gauge. An elegant fusil! I will try to post a pic of it sometime!!! It is very nice. And I have no qualms about shooting a left handed flinter!

You know what they say, "the real gun that won the West was the double barrel shotgun!"

Now I take exception to that. I have doubles, over unders, and semis. They all make the same bang and the same holes *wink*

But you are correct. Semi-auto anything is prone to more failures than the ones that "break". But that is why I bring my beautiful Franchi 20 gauge out with me on my duck hunts. They might get messy!

But for skeet - trap - sporting clays - and home defense I roll with the Semis.

Nothing like hearing that cocking action to really get in the mood ^.-
