I hate watching a great dancer (or dancing with someone) who never smiles or connects with their partner in a personal way. It doesn't look like they're having any fun. Just bored or preoccupied.

That's for sure. I've seen so many couples that are concentrating soooo hard on the steps that I fear that their heads will explode! Just have fun for heaven's sake!
This is one of the few I have of me dancing. I don't usually bring a camera with me when I go dancing. But since this was my wedding, a buddy of mine got a video of this dance. I'll try and upload it tonight!

Wow! I wish I could dance in anyway like that...... I really would like to take lessons, but to some strange reasons the only swing classes in town are for couples only :/ I blame the valentinesday mafia for that!

PrettyBigGuy, I like how her dress flows while dancing! Looks great!

I wish these were my pics! Taken by jazz photographer extraordinaire Charles Peterson at NYC's Savoy Ballroom in 1942.

Peterson identified this as a "break-away":

A "split":

A comic exit. Note the male dancer's white canvas Keds sneakers:

A real zoot suit of the time:

Yes..Luckily Miss Queenie steered me to a place that has lessons and its not a couples thing. I start on May 2nd...and I am terrified...

These pictures are just of my boyfriend Dave and I at Glen Echo a while back - they are the only decent photos I have of us dancing, and I wish I could post a picture in which I'm wearing something nicer - but Glen Echo has no AC, and I dance too fast for my skirts to keep up with me!

In the beginning, most lindyhoppers were African-American. Today the opposite is true. It's a pity there isn't a balance.

You'll also notice that all of the above pics are of either black dancers or white dancers, which is obviously a sign of the times. The one time in American history where you had people of all races and colors united by music and dance was during the 50's & 60's in New York. Everybody danced the Mambo. You had blacks, whites, Latins, Italians, Jews, and you name it, all living harmoniously on the dance floor. There was no class separation either (the dance floor at that time was still the only place where that kind of equality existed). You had poor people, the rich, the middle class, and movie stars all dancing the Mambo. On any night of the week you’d see Elizabeth Taylor, or Ava Gardener, or Marlon Brando all at the New York Palladium. This lasted until the 70’s when Mambo morphed into Salsa. Blacks in New York moved onto other types of music. Ironically in Los Angeles today if you go to a Salsa show you will see every type of person under the sun on the floor.

Sally, You are too cute! It was fun hanging with you a little bit last Wednesday. I cannot wait to do it again!! I hope I am not looking too much like an idiot when I dance! Still learning!! I had to remind a few people, "Ah! This was my first lesson!" I had a gentleman tell me that he kept forgetting that I was a first timer! I took that as a sweet compliment! Hey, maybe I don't suck as bad as I thought! :)

I'm a silly look'n critter, but I have fun. You looked adorable!
Don't worry about how well you did. Just remember that nobody is watching your mistakes anyway. Everyone is too busy having a blast doing their own thing. Not everyone picks it up right away.
Sorry I rushed off without a proper good-bye, but Josh needed to leave. I wasn't snubbing you; I just didn't see you around at first. I thought you'd left.

You were just snubbing me back for snubbing you earlier that night! Hahahahah... I will be there tonight!

Stumbled across this picture today. It's a bit old (as you can see by the date) but it is me...and I am dancing! It was taken during the semi-finals of the Canadian Championships. We only danced in those twice -- and never made the finals![huh]

What you can't see in the picture is that my partner's dress kept getting caught between my legs and I had to dance the whole comp with an orange tail!
