I will post pictures of the ones folks haven't seen soon.
I shall wait with baited breath.
I just noticed I mis-spelled "doesn't" as "don't", how back woods of me. I was the Mayor of Typoville last night.

Tonight's episode of as The Compact Opens...

is brought to you by our generous sponsors, The Coty company, makers of Airspun powder.

Without further ado, here is one of my favorites, for reasons which will be apparent shortly.

The fun thing about this one, which I simply cannot capture in a picture, is that the picture is on a clear layer of plastic over the gold background. This means all those portholes that look lit up, are the gold backing showing through the gaps in the coloring.

This is also the only compact I have ever bought in mint unused condition.
*coughs*
Which I promptly ruined by using it, while at last years QM event. It had to be done....really.

compact gurus- any info on mine?

This is one of my favorite compacts. I'm thinkings its from the 30s- pre war. Its has two compartments, one for powder, and one to hold cigarettes.

It is not signed. but does have a tiny "made in japan" stamp on the inside in almost a deco type typeface-it looks too old to me to be post war- I purchased it from a seller in England who told me it was 30s-
any info would be greatly appreciated!

What a joy to see som many super compact - A freind told me that this thread was here, so I just had to come and sign up to help spread the compact word!
I am a dealer of compacts and all things vanity - and also a member of the British compact collectors Society and cosultant / contributor to DK collectables yearly publication- so am happy to help out with any questions you have.
The red japanese one above is certainly a 1930s item and is gorgeous.
There are other places where you can buy compacts appart form ebay - www.specialistauctions.com is one for starters - where myself and other dealers have over 100 listed. There is also a dedicated vanity forum there too headed by yours truly! Lots of girly treasures for you to enjoy!

Beware of new repro compacts UK ladies!

My other half bought me one the other week from Past Times, as a treat for finishing a rather big sewing job.

I have to say it is BEAUTIFUL - lovely black and red Art Deco enamel with a few brilliants set into the lid. Unfortunately when you get it open, it isn't a compact.... it's a handbag mirror. One side is a magnifying mirror and the other side is a plain mirror. It's still gorgeous, but it doesn't have the room to hold any powder.. .[huh]

I got a little combination compact/wallet in an Ebay lot with some vintage belts, but I know nothing about it.

Has anyone ever seen a combo like that? The wallet is square, looks like ostrich skin, and has a coin pocket on one side, a billfold on the other, and a square compact in the middle. There's a little metal plate that pops open where the powder should be, though it's very shallow, I'm not sure how much could fit in there.

Any thoughts? I'm wondering whether it's worth keeping or passing along, since I have no idea what decade it's from.

There is an adorable compact on eBay right now, it has a wire-haired terrier on the front. Great for Thin Man fans. (I am not the seller)

Edit: It is currently at $5.50 & the auction title is "Vintage Double Side Enamel Gold Compact Powder Case."

I posted this...

somewhere in the Lounge, but it wasn't here... and gee, suddenly there's a compact thread!

I really spent more than I can afford on this, but can you blame me?

Its only issue seems to be the tiny scratch inside the powder compartment. It's bigger than the pictures suggest, about 3" across. But the portholes don't light up like Neecarie's!

BTW Lady Day, I use the mineral powder too, and it does help my skin!

Love this... this girly fun!

My first!

My 6th wedding anniversary was Saturday, and boy did my Boy do good! He brought me this - and I never knew he was listening when I said, months ago, that I'd love to have a beautiful vintage deco compact! It's different shells...

How do you fill your powder in there?!?

Most vintage compacts have a screen that fits down over the loose powder you put into it...

IMG_0638.jpg

is a good picture of a screen ...you put some powder in, then push the screen down gently and it holds it in there.

I only ever put enough powder for an evening out, so as not to overfill.
