This one I found amazing because belts weren't all that common on German suits in 1928. Also note the thin (and long) tie he's wearing.

The low waist and belt on his trousers really do make it look much later than 1928. With that thin tie, it could almost be 1958.

Wow, I hadn't seen that one. Thanks.

On a sidenote: Yesterday I went to a screening of the film (Spione) it in an open air space here in Berlin Mitte (surrounded by all those old buildings) with live piano playing by Neil Brand, which was great. And I fell in love with Fritsch's suits all over again. ;)

I need to find a pic of it, but the suit from "The Spy in Black". '40s portraying WWI, the suit has what must be a 2" leather belt. Very unusual.

From what I've seen in photo's and have read on the lounge, lower cut pants was indeed a style of the '20s, thus why ties were longer. Though if you look closely, the tie is longer because the tail is much shorter. As for it's thinness, it looks like the typical 3 inch wide knit ties of the era, tie width generally went hand in hand with lapel width which the single breasted suits of that era were generally of modest size.

In the first photo the knit tie looks narrower than 3" to my eyes but I wouldn't be so sure by looking at the second photo alone. The tie in the last image looks definitely a good deal wider that 3", belly warmer style.

Robert Donat's 3-piece SB tweed suit in The 39 Steps (1935) with back-belt and bi-swing back to boot:

I also love this overcoat he's wearing at the beginning of the film (and he's sporting at least three different coats in the film).

This would be my holy grail overcoat.:

Mario,

Thank you for posting those! I've wanted to do a post on that suit for some time. It was the inspiration for my 3-piece belted action back suit I had made last spring. Except I did my in POW check. It still needs to go back for one last fitting/adjustment, I'd like it to have more waist suppression.

Crossfire - 1947 - One for the fans of Herringbone

I watched this today. In the first scene I was struck by the heavyweight herringbone suit that Robert Young was wearing.

Towards the end, there is a fantastic close-up of the fabric:

some stills from Passport to Pimlico, 1949:

very short tie, diamond pattern shopcoat fabric, pleated pocket sportcoat (couldn't see the back but i'd bet it's a belted back):

That's a very nice suit. $1673 does seem cheap, though.

If the suit fit anyone here, would you wear it, or treat it as too valuable, having belonged to Bogart?

If I paid that much, I'd sure wear it! I'd have to wear it at least once to see if it gave me sartorial super powers of supreme style! :D

Clark Gable's linen suit or sport coat he wears at the start of China Seas.

It is similar to his great tweed sportcoat in It Happened One Night that we all love.

Linen or Palm Beach belted action back (shoulder pleats), flapped box pockets and double breast pockets (the tweed one had a single breast box pocket). If I was to have a bespoke linen sportcoat or suit jacket made up it would look like this in a heavy but open weave lrish linen.

George mainly wears a standard 3 button SB peaked in most of his films such as this from "Spare a copper" 1941...

... and this from "Let George do it!" 1940:

... in fact it almost looks like the same suit.
