the Hunchback of Notre Dame legend Charles Laughton. Did you know that his wife, Elsa Lanchester, knew about Laughton's sexuality? Despite that the pair were happily married from 1929 until Laughton's death in 1962. Being gay was illegal in the Forties, (it was still illegal in Scotland until 1980) so he would have kept his sexuality secret from most people. Their marriage might seem to have been a cover for Laughton to avoid prosecution, but when he died, Elsa was clearly bereft.
