One of these days, I'm going to get up enough courage to cook one of the jello montrosities in my depression-era Jello cookbooks. I think it would be pretty funny to take a salmon and pimento molded aspic on a bed of lettuce to a party and watch people's expressions of horror. lol

Nonsense, they will devour it!
i have a friend who makes this vintage dish that is a hollowed out loaf of bread, filled with a hash of sort of deviled ham, and then iced all over like a cake with cream cheese - it looks like a cake and is incredibly delicious!

Here it is, center of the table...

I have a lot of vintage appliances, kitchen gadgets and cookbooks, so I like to try to do vintage recipes in the way they would have been prepared in the 30s-50s. Recently I came across a recipe for pineapple upside-down cake made in an electric frying pan. So I had a go at it, and chronicled it here:
http://thesocialclub.forumotion.com/cookbook-f14/vintage-recipes-and-vintage-techniques-t86.htm

It came out quite well- I was pleasantly surprised!

I'm a really great baker, but sadly, I don't have access to a working oven or stove when I'm living in the dorms at school. To avoid the horrible (and very unhealthy) cafeteria food, I often make bento lunches and snacks using uncooked or microwavable food combinations. Nothing exciting, but I love the presentation. They're great for bringing to work.

A few snacks that I photographed:

I love it! It reminds me of the rueben dip that I make from a vintage recipe. People are usually horrified by it, but it's delicious once you try it. The dip is made from potted corned beef, swiss cheese, saurkraut, cream cheese and thousand island dressing. I usually serve it with little rye toast squares.

I also have a favorite comfort food recipe that I make from a 1950s Betty Crocker cookbook called Hamburger Pinwheels. You make biscuit dough, roll it out and spread a hamburger, milk, onion, crushed cracker, salt & pepper mixture on top of the dough. You roll it up and then slice the roll and cook it in the oven. I serve it with gravy, it's delicious. :)

My sourdough bread. Not nearly as nice as sixsexsix's. From her picture's, I figured with the braiding she does that maybe I should do more than just punch down and form after proofing. So this one was kneaded and folded 10 times before forming,,, and it held up very well. Next time I will slash the top:eek: .

it all looks really scrummy...

my sister did us a 1950's dinner party - complete with cheese steaks because she was having a hard time finding authentic vegetarian recipes... :)

I'm in awe of your bread. I actually used to be pretty good with bread, but I've lost my touch. And my starters for sourdough turned out *nasty* said the girl from San Francisco. shakeshead

I remember my mother serving pineapple upside down cake in that same pan! What a hoot!

And gluegungeisha - you have the cutest food!

Warning: Vegetarians, avert your eyes!

They had an amazing sale on chicken at my grocery store yesterday, so I purchased 2 of the 5 pound chickens. I talked my husband into a BBQ groaning with food. And made this with the left over chicken today - homemade chicken soup from scratch - yum!

This reminds me ... I gotta find my recipe for chili pot pie. Combo of pork and beef, roasted corn, ancho chile base, sweet potato, no beans. Baked in a corn meal and cheddar pie crust. Served with baked jalapenos stuffed with goat cheese. There's not much I like heating up the oven for in the middle of summer around here, but this meal is an exception.

That looks like an awesome soup. Missing the balls though...
I have the same dishes, but not the soup bowls! Got mine at the Goodwill.

Vintage Betty: Yum! You have a great camera, too, the way it picks up all the delicious, naughty fat!

I made this one a while ago but I thought I'd share it.

Whiskey Apple Pie

Ain't she a doll? One of the grocery stores near my place always reduces there apples and most of them are fine. This pie used a frozen crust, but it didn't have that glutenous texture that some pre-made crust has. The top is a crumble, made extra frugal by using some aging granola mixed with flour and butter and spices. The whiskey left in the bottle was too little to drink, too good to toss, so... This recipe called for ground clove, and the clove and whiskey worked nicely together.

TRAIL MIX!!!!

Cranberries (infused with orange)
Raisins (many different kinds)
Cherries
Blueberries (if I have the cash for them)
Walnuts
Almonds
Pecans
Cashews
Filberts
and love :)

I mix my own, cause I eat this stuff all the time and I got tired of picking out stuff (mainly peanuts and chocolate  ) in my trail mix. I get enough to last weeks! Yay!
