Show me the ropes?

Hello, all! I joined last night and I was wondering if anyone could just tell me about the basic goings-on of the forum, that would be so so so helpful.

I've been into vintage fashions for maybe 2 years now, and most of my wardrobe consists of repros. I actually hated shopping and modern styles until I started finding repros. I'm also really into 1940's movies and World War II. Overall, I'm just a big history fanatic who loves to try to live old-fashioned.

Welcome!! My advice would be to lurk for a little bit and get the feel of the forum, then to comment and post as you feel comfortable. I must have lurked for a year or two before I signed up. -_-;

I like to go to read tips and posts from a while back, there's so much gold just a few pages from the front.

Posting pictures is a bit clunky, and I believe that you need to have over 10 posts to include a picture. Well, ropes being plural could imply that each of you show me your individual rope, therefore adding up to equal multiple ropes. She was just rope #1. Keep 'em coming!

No, but I want to get into it. I tried to learn as a kid (my mom knows), but I'm not the most coordinated person in the world. Any tips about learning?

Here's another tip: Don't drink fluids and read the FL unless you love the feeling after you snort your drink out your nose.

I'm all drugged up on steroids and I can't sleep. I think I may have woken up the husband chuckling.

Do you have an adult education program near you? In NYS, it's associated with a program called BOCES. They have low cost classes on crafts. Also, often craft stores like JoAnn fabrics have sewing classes where you make simple projects. The women into JoAnns are really helpful, you just need to find the seamstress and when she works (there is always one who is an expert sewer, all the other staff know who she is). (It could be a he too, but I've only met women who sewed as JoAnns Staff.)

Once you get the basics in the class, you can pick the mind of the staff to see what patterns you can do and build from there. Many patterns aren't very complicated, just a bunch of tiny steps. It's learning to do all the tiny steps and then having the patience to put them together.

We have a great thread on sewing questions. There is a ton of info there and the ladies here are very very nice. I've used a lot of advice there. Feel free to ask questions.

Also, don't be offended if you ask a question and are referred to an existing thread. It's part of the culture here. You didn't do anything wrong, it's just the best way to get the info you need. Sometimes the threads can be hard to find, but existing members often know of the threads off hand and can find them more easily than a new member. It's always good to do a search, it's probably come up before, but if you say you can't anything another lady will hook you up. Or you could be bringing up a totally new topic!

I got some sewing books, scoured the Internet. There are tutorials everywhere.
