Shirt dickies?

Hi all,

Some of you might remember shirt dickies. They are like the neck of a shirt and go under a sweater/shirt so it looks like you are wearing a shirt under your sweater.

I looked online and found 1 site with some turtleneck ones, but most of the sites I found were for Dickies brand clothing.

Also, I have only seen the dickies in turtlenecks. Do they make them like a collared shirt (less dress shirt not polo), so it would look like I am wearing a collared shirt under a sweater?

You can make your own quite easily. Find a shirt or blouse at Goodwill with the right collar style and cut off the sleeves and sides, and shorten the bottom, leaving enough "shirt" so that your dickey doesn't creep out of your sweater neckline. Zigzag stitch all around the edges.You may even need to safety pin the dickey to your bra in some fashion. We used to wear these in our school days, and sometimes they would have a tendency to creep.
You can also adapt any collared dress or blouse pattern into a dickey. This would give you endless options as far as collar style and fabrics.

I think one of my vintage sewing books has patterns for dickeys that you can scale up, as well as some instructions about keeping them from creeping. If anyone likes, I can scrounge it up and scan a couple of pages.

This pattern shows a dickie from the '40s. It looks like it would be easy to modify an old blouse - a great use for a blouse with underarm problems. This one has a waistband to hold it down.
