Shearer recently visited NYC.
She has an interest in the plastic pocketbook, so we brought her to a collector in the midst of thinning out his collection.

She chose the grey purse, then scurried to the airport like a thief.

If there weren't so many witnesses, I would have thieved them all! I about died... so beautiful and all in minty condition.

I also made away with a newsboy's cap:

And a pair of vintage sunglasses (holy photographer's reflection, Batman!):

*plots a road trip to SD to steal the grey one* ;)

I'll take that brown one in the foreground--they're all lovely though! The green sunglasses are fab too--looks like you had a great time Shearer!

Yeah, I reallllly liked that one too. I was trying to pace myself, though I can see from my blurry hand it wasn't working too well :eusa_doh:

Plastic purses are highly valued? [huh]
Seems I've seen all kinds of 'em in my travels.
I'll have to pay closer attention to purses I see at thrift stores and such, if I can procure something good at a good price,...what should one look for? Certain names? Certain types of plastic? I'm completely in the dark here.

Wilardy, Dorset Rex, Llewelyn, Rialto, Patricia of Miami & Stylecraft of Miami, Gilli... there's more, but I can't think off the top of my head. They took off in the 50's with the introduction of lucite. Oh, the fabulous plastics of the atomic era :D

Sometimes they'll be signed or have the original designer's sticker inside, but occasionally you have to identify the maker by the design. Dorset Rex made a lot of purses with woven leather or metal on top. Some designers had certain types of clasps, etc.

Watch out for clouding in the lucite... cracking and separation at the "seams" are common problems. They don't take well to being stored in overly hot or cold attics (they're a fragile breed ;) ) As well, sometimes a deteriorating lucite will have a vinegary smell, so sniff away!

Also if you store deteriorating lucite around "healthy" lucite, the deterioration can spread to the good lucite. It starts a chemical reaction domino effect. So be careful where you store your goodies!

See, I, too think I've seen these along my travels but paid them no mind. Now I'll keep my eyes open! Thanks for posting this info!

For all the Lucite fans out there...

Unbeknownst to me, my boyfriend had been plotting behind my back to get me my second choice in Lucite purses from this photo. I was gifted at Christmas with the red Lucite pocketbook directly in front of me, and I love it.

Here it is in photo form:

(The original sticker reads "Feiner Bags, N.Y. Fifth Ave.")

(Detail of carved lid.)

And here's my grey Lucite purse out on the town. (Feraud action figure not included!)

Anyone else here collect Lucite purses and feel like sharing photos?

I like to use the things I collect, so I often take my Lucite purses out when I'm doing my day-to-day shopping. Got any photos of your plastic pocketbook out on the town?

Not to be judgmental here...all right, maybe just a little...but it seems a shame that a man has cornered all those swell bags.

But that's NY for ya...we're Obsession Central over here. If you don't have some deeply rooted psychic drive you're in thrall to, you won't last long in this town. ;)

Holy crap! That is gorgeous!!! Look at that detail! I love that red... I am in awe! :eusa_clap

Thanks! I, too, am in love with the colour :D I get so tired of seeing the huge, jangly, Olsen Twin modern purses... why can't they make plastic purses like this again?!

But I love when I meet people with deeply rooted (sometimes scary) passions! lol

I've cornered/hoarded several of these types of purses myself... I am glad that this particular collector is a guy who appreciates the style, treats them with meticulous care, and is willing to sell them off (at fair prices!) to others who feel the same way.

Hahaha yeah! I don't want a purse big enough that my dogs can fit in it! If I wanted something that big, I'd carry a duffle bag. Actually I admit, I do have one big(ish) purse that I got specifically to smuggle in my camera at concerts. I do carry it around if I have to. If it were up to me, I wouldn't carry a purse. Of course if I had one that fancy I'd make sure I showed it off. :)
