Hello Ladies and Gents,

There's been some grousing here on the FL of late about the lack of encouragement for wearing a fedora out in public. Some guys get a little tired of the comparsions to everyone from Indians Jones to Elwood Blues as well.

I wanted to share my experience today, to encourage you all.

I walk up to the bank teller window and this lovely, young, Latin girl says to me "I like your style." I mumbled something like, "Wow, thanks." And then she continued "...yeah, you wear a different kind of hat everytime you come in, that's so cool."

Imagine, no comparisions to ANYONE, AND she used the word "Style".

I think we're onto something here. Don't give up now.

I've noticed that men of Latin descent tend to show appreciation of nice clothes and hats I wear. In the very white neighborhood where I live, though, I seem to be invisible when I wear not even dressy, but just decent, clothes.

When my brother owned a marble and granite business, he employed mostly Mexican immigrants. Without any encouragement from my brother, they would always dress a little nicer when they were going to a client's home to install stone.

The only Indy comments I get anymore are from my friends! Ironic, huh? Oh, well. Unlike the chicken/egg thing, we know what came first! Indy wouldn't have worn a hat if it didn't look good.

And so you do Spiridon. Keep wearing them. I guarantee, whether we say it or not, we ladies notice. A guy in a hat, cool suit, classy overcoat, and just with that je ne sais quoi confidence in his stride, will be watched, whether you see us doing it or you don't. Keep it up guys. You give us something to look forward to.

I'm particularly amused by use of the word "Dashing," it just seems right somehow.

Given the efforts you ladies make, it seems only right that we gents should make an attempt at looking fit to keep your company!

Thanks for the encouragement. My theory is that men that just follow the crowd ususally don't stand out amoung the ladies.

Nice. I've gotten a lot of good comments from ladies and men alike. They especially love it when you tip your hat or if you take it off for them when they walk into an elevator. ;)

Just a quick "tip." I usually don't tip my hat to a man. I can touch the brim as if tipping or nod my head in his direction but not the same as you would a woman. Certain men can get the wrong idea ;) and a friend of mine's grandfather took it as an insult because it was like you were calling him a woman in a subtle way. :p

I attended a wedding last Friday that was basically casual, but "casual" was not specified, so I wore a light tan soft pinstripe with a short but subtle brown patterned '40's silk tie and my "medium" brown Adam fedora. I was flattered by the many positive (and a few overtly flirtatious) comments from the ladies and a few gents, but the gangster, Capone, etc. came up more often than I would have liked.

The best compliment that I received (I think??) was when the father of the groom came up to me at the reception and said, " you tryin' to make my boy look bad? Good for you!"

Obviously, I was not really intentionally upstaging anyone, but classic casual style seems to attract more positive attention than a rented tux.

Guess it's good that I didn't wear a light dinner jacket and black homburg with spats...that is casual for an evening wedding, isn't it????

I could see myself complimenting a guy on a sharp-looking hat but then saying something about gangsters without meaning it in a bad way, PutALidOnIt. I do know some guys around here who would be pleased with that kind of thing. If they were girls saying that, I would count them among the flirts!

But this whole digression of mine is sadly :eek:fftopic: :)

a nice hat on a guy makes him look so sophisticated, which especially these days it's a sight for sore eyes, I more admire from a distance but with reading this thread, maybe I should start paying some compliments!

Usually when I get the gangster comment, it is intended as a compliment. As someone said above, some guys consider it cool. [huh]

I do get more compliments than I expect, which is always a good thing. More than that, I get many more looks, at least according to my ever watchful wife!

A kind word can make someone's day. It is amazing the difference it can make.

The gangster comment bugs me. It's not a compliment it's sarcasm, a dis, plain and simple. When people say it what they mean is you look like a movie gangster, which is about as "nice" a compliment as being told you look like a cowboy or a wookie. When someone wears a baseball cap, do people tell them they look like Babe Ruth? When they wear a trucker cap are they told they look like a trucker [huh]

If you're into parading about in costume, and "gangster" is part of your repertoire, then maybe being told you look like a gangster is a compliment. And tomorrow you can bask in the praise of your trapeze artist costume. "Nice tights; where's your high wire?"

The comment at the top of the thread is actually complimentary, without, I assume, sarcasm. Being told you have style is complimentary and personal, it doesn't come from the single reference point in a pathetic pea brain (hat=gangster) or a competitive need to bring you down a notch.

Well, i have three people who regularly give good compliments. ONe is the checkout girl in the local dry cleaners, who is astounded by the quality of the suits i take them to clean. She also likes my hats.

Number 2 is an old guy with a greek fisherman's hat whoo rides the bus with me every morning. He can identify the correct era of each suit i wear and the model of hat, somtimes.

Number 3 is an ageing black gent who i see occasionally at bus stops. I know he's around when i hear from the distance a scream of "Mr. Clean. There he is ... Mr Clean". He calls me Mr. Clean, as you may have noticed.

All three of them very nice people to talk to.

All meant in the best possible taste.
