For the last couple of years I've been using a 1962 Gillette Slim Adjustable, 5-6 days a week. Recently, though, I picked up a 1956 Gillette Super Speed Red Tip. It has only one setting: efficient -- a very good shaver. Right now I'm alternating them, about 3 shaves a week. But I plan to use the SS while I have the Slim replated in nickel this spring.

Creams: either Taylor of Old Bond Street (TOBS) Sandalwood, or Col. Conk's Santa Fe Cedar. The latter I bought because of the name and the scent, but it doesn't lather up well for me. So I mix it with the TOBS. When the Conk is done, I think I'll stick with the Bond sandalwood.

Aftershave: Clubman Pinaud regular, and then their leather/smoky Special Reserve as cologne.

What did I buy today? It has no brand on it. Mechanism works perfectly. And what blades should I get for it?

Edit: Google seems to be telling me it's a 1955-1957 Gillette. I scrubbed it a bit and sure enough the name Gillette appears. Still interested to know more and to know what blades people are buying these days.

Hm. This appears to be a dead thread. I did some research and I appear to have a 1954-1957 Gillette Super Speed Red Tip razor. Looking forward to trying it. A selection of blades on order from Italian Barber.

The red tips are a pretty aggressive razor so experimenting with different blades is probably a good idea. I favor Feather blades with Gillette Black as second choice, but they might be a bit much for a red tip especially if you're just starting out. Good luck, it is an enjoyable hobby besides being a great way to shave.

I think the red tip is sort of like the red british uniform. The blood doesn't show. I've got a black tip I may use for my spring shearing/shave in ten days.

Picked up a Edwin Jagger that was on sale from Art of Manliness, this thing is built like a tank!

Broke in the new Jagger today with an Israeli blade, C&E Sandalwood soap, Col Conk Badger brush and finished it off with Pinaud Clubman Aftershave. 3 passes and a very nice shave.

I scrubbed and sterilized (scrub, boiled 10 minutes, overnight in rubbing alcohol) that "red tip". I can now see the date info- it's a 1955 (second quarter) Gilette Super Speed. I've tried it now with two blades. The Feather gave a wonderfully close shave, but with some blood, especially around the base of my neck, which has some creasing/bumpiness. I also tried a Shark blade, which seems almost foolproof, with virtually no blood, but the shave isn't as close as I would hope for. Next I'll try a Ladas. Looking for that perfect combination of close shave, but no blood loss!

Always a different experience with the stiff blade. Different pop than a double edge or even a straight.

I have been wet shaving for years, but with a cartridge razor. I recently learned that the old fashioned safety razor can deliver an equal, or better, shave for a fraction of the price (in the long run)! I feel like a schmuck for buying those overpriced newfangled cartridges for years, but that's all about to change! I'm looking for a good safety razor, and am leaning towards the Giesen & Forsthof Timor. I prefer the screw head over a butterfly mechanism, it seems more precise. Who has one? Do you like it? I'm also considering the Muhle R89, but the Timor appeals a bit more to me with the solid brass handle vs the Muhle zinc alloy.

What's your budget? I recommend the Rockwell 6S or the Rockwell 6C. The exact same design, but made with different materials. The S indicates it is made of stainless steel, though it isn't milled from solid billet. It is solid stainless steel, but it is made with metal injection molding technology. The C indicates it is made from zinc alloy. The 6S is twice the price, but at $100 for a stainless steel razor, it is a good value. I love my 6S. It's the most forgiving razor I've tried so far. They hit the design so incredibly well. It doesn't matter what plate I use, and I use plates 4-6 on a regular basis.

Do a little research. I've had my 6S for a couple years, but I think since then they've had some quality control issues with either the 6S or the 6C. I can't remember which one. They do have good customer service, so if you were to get a bad one, they'll replace it.

I don't care for any of the "89" variations, and there are many. Most of the bigger name makers have an 89 in their line. I believe Maggards has the cheapest one at $7 for the V3 head + whatever the handle of choice you add. I'm honestly surprised it is one of the biggest selling razor designs. It's a price point I guess, but it isn't much of a bargain if you end up not wanting to shave with it.

You probably figured it out by now, but if not, that is a Gillette Red Tip. Around a 4.5 on their Slim adjustable razor dial. Great razor.

Yes, Super Speed "Heavy Weight",

and working great so far. To date, I like the Feather blade best in it, close and less blood. Shark seems less desirable than the Ladas. But I'll try a few more of each.

That's a great ad. I've never seen it. Thank you for posting it. I'm not sure what to think of the campaign though. In contemporary terms, we don't talk about skin and beard quite like that. When we discuss those razors now, we speak in terms of aggressiveness. The Blue Tip being the least aggressive, with the Red Tip being the most aggressive. It is affected by skin type somewhat, but it's more about what type of shave the person prefers. It isn't so much about thickness of beard, though it roundaboutly is. Some like more blade feel than less. Some like that greater angle of the blade striking the skin. What I'm so poorly stating is that today, we talk about a preference for feel more than the physical.

As for blades, I'd recommend keep trying. Some of these online shops offer blade trial packs. I like Feather blades, but they can be harsh. Just my opinion though. Blades seem to be even more idiosyncratic than the razors themselves. I use Astras as a compromise. They are not my favorite though. They're almost as sharp as Feather, but slightly smoother and one of the cheapest blades out there.

Hi folks. I'm new to the Lounge, and only just found this thread. Have been reading a bit. Thought I'd throw in my story about shaving. I'm only relaying my experience's, and not meaning to change anyone's mind or poo poo anyone's preference's. I spent around 3 years collecting old Gillette razors. I have a curio cabinet full of nearly every different one they made. Certainly not all, but a pretty extensive collection. I have shaved with nearly all of them. I tried most all the blades out there, both in the trial packs, and then some based on other's reviews. I finally settled on the Feather blade. I found they worked best for me. In time, I found the Gillette's weren't quite getting the job done, so bought one of the Merkur's that had very good reviews. I have used it exclusively for maybe 2 years or so now. But even at that, some times it is somewhat harsh. Recently, the wife and I were at a "Dollar Tree" store, getting things for a cruise we were going on. I picked up some of the disposable razors for women. I was going to use them on the cruise, and give what I didn't use, to the wife upon our return. To my surprise, I have gotten the all time best shave from those $1 razors!! I could not believe how smooth the shave was and how long they lasted before dulling. Since I have so many Feather brand blades, (I bought a box of like a 1000!), I'm still using those. But I assure you, once they are gone, I'm going back to the $1 ones! Who knew!

Sell the blades on a message board (like here or the other shave-based ones) and go right-quick to your $1 shaves. There's no reason you should have to wait years. The amount of consumption that goes on in the wet shaving community is insane. No, it's mindblowing. They'd snatch up your Feathers in a second.

The Shave Nook. Damn Fine Shave. The Shave Den. Badger & Blade. Those are the bigger ones that come to mind, but I'm sure there are others.
