This is a piece of music I composed and recorded... its a slow, gentle piece called 'Mid Winter' played on Native American style flutes (a lowB a highB and an E ) with a backing of soundscapes created with cello, violin and flutes.

You can download, if interested, a 320kbs MP3 file - 11.77mb... from Mediafire.... hope you like it.

We were having a discussion about MacArthur and the movie 'Inchon' in another thread at the time that the Tommy Lee Jones film 'EMPEROR!' was being released. I found this drawing of Douglas MacArthur that I'd done in High School years ago so I thought I put it up on the Lounge. -dixon cannon

I've just discovered this thread. Lots of talented people here! Here's a watercolor I did of an early Hawaiian steel guitar player.

Great painting! The colors are great! Love them guitars. I Have a National Lap Steel I fool around with tuned in open G like a Dobro. Do you play always with a steel laying flat?

The art I am involved in is wearable art. I carve Fossil Woolly Mammoth Ivory tusk into large pendants. I also scrimshaw pictures in ivory also. This ivory was found buried in Siberia and said to be 10 - 40,000 years old. The colors are from absorbing the different minerals from where they are buried. This slab has some of the most beautiful colors I have seen. There are 7 different colored layers in this piece and even neon type sparkles on the front. Working with this material is no different than hardwood but must be done slow with hand tools not to overheat the material. The Argentium sterling silver bail is hand-fabricated by me also.

I play both on the lap and in standard position. Unlike most lap steel players I play in standard EADGBE tuning so I can switch to standard position quickly.

This is a flute I made, at a workshop with Dartmoor flute maker and musician Nigel Shaw... its made of Oak, sourced locally , and plays in the key of G {pentatonic minor} the ends on the leather tie, are from reindeer antlers, that Nigel and his wife were given on a trip to Siberia.

Same as wood or antler but much more dense and hard. Must cut, file, sand, very slow so not to overheat it. I finish it off buffing with fabuluster to a mirror finish. This stuff is the most beautiful material in the world! It takes up to 7 years sometimes drying in a controlled climate to dry after being frozen in Siberia. My next project below will reveal many colors when finished.

Very interesting indeed... it really is beautiful stuff, and the age of it make it something special. Quite a lot of pressure to not make mistakes I would imagine.

That's nice work Howard. As a scrimshander myself, I'd love to see some of your scrimshaw.
