That's a great sketch Lady Day!

Good use of light to convey mood and character.

In Photoshop there's various filters like 'Colour Burn', (in the drop down menu on Layers) If you add a light white airbrush layer over your line art, then a coloured layer on 'Colour Burn' it'll add some cool effects.

Apologies If that's a bad explanantion... I'm no computer guru! :) Rufus

Fantastic shots Mr Brown! I really admire the lighting of your work, and the Pshop alterations!

I'm a relative newbie to computing, and learning very much by trial... and a lot of error.

Thanks. I've learned photoshop by trial and error, too. My lighting is one big softbox that I have crammed next to my desk and use a large black sheet thumbtacked over a doorway. No fancy studio...;)

QB... wow... I'm so impressed! Incredibly results!!

DDD - Yup... we're lousy cheats and charlatans! ;-)

I love using anything to help your work.. How is digital manipulation different from any other technique or tool... ultimately it's what YOU do with it.

You can give the same pencil to 2 people, and get anything from a shopping list to a beautiful drawing... It's what you do with the tools that matters... not your medium.

:) Ruf... off to arty cheat! :)

Not proper art. Was never into digital imaging, always prefered film photography & making things to messing about with a computer at uni.

People have altered photographs in some way or another probably since it was invented.

Are you saying that any type of art done on a computer is 'cheating?'

I don't really consider this art, but I love taking pics of achitechture and furniture. But I like to do it from unusual angles, so you may look at a well known building, but you don't really know it. If that makes sense

No, I was saying I prefer to have more involvement than through a computer terminal. I am, as yet, to get dirty fingernails & the smell of oil paint from any computer I have used. Perhaps I'm using the wrong ones. The Gs we used, I hated. You can't beat being in a studio. Everything about it is wonderful.

I never said I hate everyone who uses digital means to make art, I said I don't like it myself.

As I found on the many courses I have studied in art, not everyone likes the same thing, so please calm down.

As a traditional artist using oils and graphite primarily, I tend to agree. Nothing can take the place of real hand made art. I use Photoshop and Coreldraw for some things such as business cards and brochures though because of the convenience. Also comes in handy for fixing up less than perfect photographs, of which I have quite a few! lol I use my own photos as reference material for paintings for the most part, and Photoshop allows me to alter and combine photos to produce practical images from which to paint. Much easier and less expensive than taking them to a print shop.
But for making actual drawings or paintings, the software programs are a tedious nightmare! I can produce a finished drawing on paper in perhaps 2 weeks, tedious enough in itself, as I am a stickler for realism in all that I do. Trying to do the same thing with Corel would take years I think.

I agree with Maj.NickDanger and Dolly. I am a Fine Artist <-notice the caps, and I love the tactile nature of how I work.

PLUS, I don't need electricity.. so if I am stranded on a deserted island I can paint or draw to my hearts content. LOL

I dont think using photoshop is cheating. The pics I posted where shot with a digital camera, so they were in color, I photoshopped them B/W, probalby upped the contrast and cropped out some edges.

I don't have cameras that take old B/W filmrolls, nor do I have the equipment to lighten or darken a whole building or an interior in the way I wish.

For me it would be the same if you mix up two colors and paint with them, since you dont use the 'original' colors.. a thing I would do if I were to paint!

I would say it is more important that you enjoy the finished product instead of fussing over how it was done, but that is just my humble and un-educated opinion.

Now that I have Photoshop, it's indispensable for all the photos I take, whether digital or film, for art reference, or for ebay. Seems there's no such thing as the perfect photo right out of the camera. At least without spending hours setting something up in a studio maybe.

This debate is as old as the hills.. digital art vs. analog art? LOL
I tip my hat to those that can learn the programs enough to manipulate all those electrons to come up with 'art'. I can't do it well enough.
Like Maj. Nick said, it takes less time to do something by hand than it would on the computer.

For me though, it has to do with value. I know the digital artists out there would throw rocks at me for saying this, but I can't see comparing a painting done by one of the masters that has been around for ages, to a series of ones and zeros manipulated to produce an electronic image which is only as good as its shelf life. I.E. Archival quality. (I am talking here of the image before it is printed).

And back on topic, Darhling, your photographs are amazing. I normally tend to think that pictures of architecture taken by an amateur are bland, but yours are pretty unique. :D
