Nah, it just depends when your hat was made and by who. I would dry most modern factory produced hats today for fear of shrinkage.
If you rub it dry, rub it counter clockwise int he direction of the felt fur distribution. Patting it dry is a better idea though.

That's pretty much the way I did it. Slap and Tickle........against the grain.
The cloth picked up the excess nicely and the anti-clockwise brought the nap back with no lint form the cloth.
