Thanks for post the auction pics. That lets the ones that may not know about this great fedora, some of its history.
Getting back to the Shady Oak Farm model. I will call it the Shady Oak Farm because Miller Brothers still has a Shady Oak in production. But are you wearing it with the brim turned down? I kinda like that on some hats. My straw Miller that I wear to work in the garden and such looks good with the turn down. But my vintage Supernatural straw looks best with the back turned up.
Once again thanks for the pics, you really have a great hat there.:eusa_clap

p.s. I love the way your c-crown turned out. It looks great, but still has the hand bashed look to it.

Many thanks, RBH! I'm sorry for the delay in posting the pics, but hope you enjoyed your Mai Tai's!;) I haven't decided for sure yet whether I'm going to wear this hat brim-up or brim-down in the back. For twenty years now, I have been wearing Stetson Gun Clubs (with the Profile 016 -- same as on the Stetson Dune) as my main outdoor hats. So, I am very used to the brim down-look and love it. But I have tried wearing the brim up in back on this Shady Oak OR, and, perhaps for the first time ever, I am seriously considering going with that look, a la Seabiscuit... It looks very good on this hat. So, I think I'll give it a while and see how that develops.

Glad you like the bash! I love the teardrop crown look, and I love the actual process of putting the bash in the hat. For me, it's almost a zen exercise -- totally absorbing, and time goes by without my even knowing it. I took a lot of time and care with this one, and I'm really pleased with how it came out.

It's NAAHHSS! For sure! So clean and sleek looking! Beautiful: it has all the features the Guild loves, and the Brotherhood!

Thanks, Dean -- much appreciated! Have been looking forward to joining the ranks of the Guild and the Brotherhood for some time now!

Beautiful, as I suspected... enjoy.

So where is that wonderful tiki bar?

Thanks, FeltFan. The tiki bar is the now defunct Trader Vic's at the Palmer House in Chicago. What a tragedy when the new owners of the Palmer House decided to shut TV's doors this past New Year's.:rage: It was truly a beauty!

Hey -- looks like you're within easy range of the TV's in Emeryville. Love that place!!!:)

I am ashamed. Ashamed. Ashamed to admit I have not been yet.
It is probably less than two miles from my house. Forbidden Island in
Alameda isn't a lot further and I haven't been there yet, either.
I can only offer the excuse that I haven't had a car for years
(and tend to go out for drinks with a carless crowd, mostly by chance)
and both places are relatively dangerous to get to by bicycle.
But I have a car now so all I need is a designated driver...

I do love Trad'r Sam's and the Tonga Room in San Francisco.
I am also ashamed I didn't make it to the TV's in SF before it closed
and was replaced by a yuppie restaurant.

So when do we get to see that dreamy hat on your head?
I assume you didn't buy it to keep your tiki god out of the sun.

I'll try to get some more photos once my wife gets back to town (she's visiting family in Florida while I'm freezing my a*# off in Michigan!).

On the tiki front -- the gods are angry! :rage: You better get over to Emeryville pronto! Last time I was in San Fran I went to the Tonga Room for the first time and had a blast. Forbidden Island is on my list for next time. I've also been to the new Trader Vic's in San Francisco -- it was OK, but I'm sure it pales in comparison to the old location. When you go to TV's in Emeryville, ask for the San Francisco Mai Tai -- it's the original recipe, and delish!

P.S. What size is that NOS Penny's Marathon you mentioned in another thread?;)

Cheers,
Jimmy

Actually, Trader Vic invented the Mai Tai right here in Oakland.

I certainly plan to have exactly that drink.

It was 7 3/8 and a bit big at that. I could just barely get it
on my 7 1/2 LO head, but I'd have had to stretch it if I were
going to wear it comfortably. If you are a 7 1/2 regular oval,
you might be just fine. Let me know by PM if you want
help picking it up. The brim was not stingy, but not as wide
as I might have liked, same goes for crown height. Wide and tall
for a 50s hat.

Seems to me that if your wife is in Florida, you deserve a quick
trip to California. I'll buy the first round at Trader Vic's after you
get the hat.

Had to bring this one up front again and thanks to the OR thread for bringing up the OR history again regarding Amon Carter. I read the references when I first was looking into hats but was too novice to appreciate the OR until I acquired and wore them. This is a magnificent post. Be nice to load the pictures in the OR thread If I did not overlook the fact that these pics are already there.

Wow -- what a surprise to see this thread re-surface! I have since tweaked the crease on the Shady Oak OR a bit, so here is an updated photo:

Jimmy, great thread and I can't find the words to describe that Shady Oaks Farm OR...nothing that would do it justice. Incredible!

Justdog, thanks for resurecting this; I must have missed it in my read through the old threads.
