I don't know what a palmetto bug is but I don't like the sound of it! I am glad you triumphed, but I am not a bit surprised it undermined you. I hope you have a really lovely weekend and see good things in your new environment.

Thank you...

erm palmetto bugs...are basically huge flying cockroaches.....they go by various names depending on where in the US you are, but regardless of the name they are just icky.

I just recently moved as well... and for four months we were living in limbo with my in-laws (that was fun :p ) until we settled into our new place in June. Talk about not feeling "at home"! I always felt like I had to leave and that we were in the way. I've got three little kids and we were all corralled into the basement.

Being in our new place now with all our stuff again is refreshing but the house still doesn't quite feel like home yet. I think I need to put some pictures up or something.

You might have flying cockroaches (yikes!) but where I live we have wolf spiders  They are extremely fast and scary!!

This summer we had an unusual infestation of MILLIPEDES! They were everywhere in the laundry room/basement and I spotted a few in my flat. Never had a millipede outbreak before lol

Unless you have an infestation of ladybugs. Some people have problems with that. But if anyone here has a ladybug infestion, corral them and send them my way. I have an aphid problem in my garden.

I'm being overrun with crickets this year -- i had one in the kitchen last nite and it greatly upset my cat, who couldn't figure out why it was making that horrible noise.

Ladybugs aren't so innocent -- if they're orangey-colored, they might be Japanese beetles, which can easily overrun a house, and which smell awful when you squash them. Don't be fooled.

hmm I wonder who would win.....the ladybug impostors or the giant flying roach.....

if another giant flying thing appears, I might have to stage a showdown...

p.s. is this why people long for autumn ? less tropical bugs?

But seriously...

When are you inviting all of us over for a Rocky I - IV marathon? 9 1/2 straight hours of Rocky is good for the soul! BTW, 'we' don't include the last two Rocky movies just like 'we' don't acknowledge The Godfather, Part III.

Too Late. We'll be there Tuesday. Those of us who are of Italian decent will be compelled to wear boxing trunks and Italian Stallion Robes. So don't be frightened when a few hundred people in their drawers are standing on your doorstep.

We'll start the viewing around 8 PM. We should be done by 5 Am. You'll LOVE it!

As an Army Brat...

…who never lived anywhere more than a few years until recently there is one thing to do: get out. Spend as little time in your place as possible. Better to be by yourself in crowed coffee shop than alone at home. The more time you spend out, the more you’ll begin to “own” where you live and begin to meet people as they see you again and again. As you begin to own your area, you’ll know what there is to do, to stick yourself in, etc.

Tossing in my few cents here:

I moved from Pa to Wv in 2006. We had to live with my aunt and uncle. Living hell.

Annnnnyway....the bugs ^ We have Woodroaches, they fly. I have an avid fear of any form of roach. Its terrible.

We also have the Fake Ladybugs. What happened was they were released to kill the gypsy moth that was killing trees, they thought they'd do the job, then die. However they bred with normal lady bugs and made the nasty half breed biting smelling bugs.

We also have Deer, maaajor vehicle hazard. We have bears, we have mountain lions, coyotes, a black panther, raccoons and it just makes from some crazy stories. lol

We have an incredibly insane number of large spiders on our deck this year. The webs they create are frightening, yet it is a fun science/nature lesson for my daughter. We can turn on the porch light and watch them weave their web (which is pretty amazing) and then watch as they lie in wait for their prey.

I second (or third? Fourth?) the notion about putting up pictures. That makes my house feel like home.

No matter where you move, it seems the nasty bugs always seem to follow...

My town is swarming with big, black, ugly field crickets. Yesterday, I drove to Sonic for a limeade. While I was waiting for my drink, I saw a crow eating two crickets. After I got my limeade, I reached down to put my car in drive. And wouldn't you know, a HUGE cricket was sitting right on my foot! I yelped, kicked my foot up, but I knew I had to leave the parking lot because there was no room to get out of the car without blocking people. I pulled into an ice cream shop next door and jumped out my car. I ended up asking two people to help me get the cricket out. (I'm so insectophobic that I can't even swat at a cricket for fear of it hopping on me). The first guy couldn't find the darn thing, because it went under the seat. Finally, a lady and her sister came over to help. The cricket jumped to the very front of the car on the passenger side, then vaulted under the seat, and finally hopped onto her leg before hitting the asphalt. I shut the doors and got out of there, but not before offering to buy the lady an ice cream for being so helpful (and nice enough not to laugh at me).

The event stuck with me even this morning. I had my husband check my car interior before I drove to the gym. lol

I moved 5 times in the last 10 years and spent many months in foreign countries.
I always had an "emergency settling pack" in my luggage :

- my favorite cooking book
- a candle
- a lavender bag
- a framed picture from family and friends
- my old an broken but lucky pen

With this stuff on my dorm/hotel bed, I felt home.

The first thing I do when I settle in a new house is cooking my favorite food :

Surroundings may be different but ratatouille and apple pie smells remain the same ^^.
