I agree, its a sealed beam conversion.

I think if I was going to do a conversion today though, I would have to find a way to engineer some HID projectors into the stock housings.

Ah, but the sealed-beam conversions are a neat '40s accessory, and handy a handy way to get sealed beams or even halogen lamps if you're not much of an engineer.
