Semi-Formal Wedding in NYC- What?

I was at a wedding in New York City this past weekend that was semi-formal. The majority of women were not wearing nylons and many wore open toe shoes and sandals (not peep toe).

Is this the new semi-formal wedding attire?

Semi-formal dress has always afforded a wider latitude than Formal, especially on the ladies side. I've attended events (older crowd) were long dresses/gowns were worn and I've attended events (younger crowd) where the little black dress reigned supreme. I think that generally speaking the older crowd has a better idea of what kind of dress is expected for a certain occasion, though as the boomers age that is becoming less the case. Also, New Yorkers tend to try to stretch Summer into Fall so sandals sans stockings doesn't surprise.

On the ladies side, I think they certainly can be. I'm a bloke, and I wear flops with a suit all the time. Got married in 'em even. But I am beach person, I think in the city it is a little different atmosphere. That said I would still probably rock them, depending.

Flip Flops are semi-formal?

I didn't think that sandals were semi-formal...
I don't believe there's any rule against them per se. I've seen some very stylish women wear dressy, strappy sandals with long dresses and it looks fine. That said, I can't see any sandal working with a cocktail dress.

Some young women today seem to have difficulty matching their footwear to the event.

^ Unnecessary. As aficionados of style from a certain time period it is natural to discuss these issues. As long as we do not fall into the trap of assuming morality based on clothing, all is well.

Flip flops, sandals, etc. are specialized items and many would say inappropriate for situations like weddings and meeting the President of the U.S. Heck, I look great in a bathrobe but I wouldn't wear one to meet a dignitary.

I remember seeing that picture and thinking.... if that was my daughter wearing those flip flops to meet the president, she'd be dead meat.

Interesting.... :p

Yes, if the President takes the time to change out of his Crocs, the least you can do is ditch the flip flops.

To me, it looks like the young woman on the far right, and the two women standing directly next to Mr. Bush are wearing what I call "strappy sandals." They have a small to large heel (some are wedges), and straps, some go around your ankel, but they are not "beach wear" flip flops, but actually a dress shoe. I always thought that these were perfectly acceptable to wear to a summer wedding. I've never seen a bride wear anything but strappy sandals (those whom I've seen their shoes), and I've never been a bridesmaid where I wasn't asked to buy a pair of strappy sandals, often white or dyed to match the dress. In fact, I don't think I've ever seen a bridesmaid wear anything but strappy sandals.

The worst is black hose with flip flops. Urgh.
