The issue of waistcoat length was discussed a couple of months ago. I remember suggesting that it's likely that lower modern waists are responsible for this: as trouser waists have come down, the waistcoat has come lower to match them, to the point whre nowadays it does typically sit that little bit lower than the jacket. I see this all the time in recent photos of white tie affairs.

All the coat tail weights that I have found are round, usually a little larger than a quarter but smaller than a half dollar. The have a small hole in the middle with a bar across it. They are always made from lead. From examples of old military coats that I have examined, the coat tail weight was usually sewn into the lining at the bottom of the tail. Therefore, they may or may not apply to pockets in tail coats.

This does seem to be the case. Given that trousers have suffered a two or three inch reduction in rise, could the jackets not be cut two or three inches longer? Just musing here.

That would make logical sense, yes.... I wonder why that hasn't really happened....
