Searching for the Perfect winter coat

Hi everybody

I wanted to ask you guy guys where i can find my ideal winter coat. I know i may be very early for my search..

The problem is that i am very bad to search for coats online , everything i find its just high priced brands and their collection..But i know that there is unkown brands that carry high quality cloths/jackets etc..I tought maybe you guys here could give me some pointers where to look!

I have been checking on the belstaff milford coat and love the style of it..i havnt tried it so iam uncertain if its a warm coat. I want a coat that looks like the belstaff fenbridge/milford/wellington , a real sturdy warm big coat

Look for an original Peacoat.
Member "Peacoat" put out a series of info posts on vintage peacoats (they're stickies I believe)
They have superior wool to most of what you find today. Plus, they're just the right mix of refined and casual to wear pretty much anywhere. Finally, most are available at great prices.

Your question is so open ended it is difficult for anyone to answer. Your approximate age and location on the planet might help generate more meaningful responses? Since I live in N Texas, my go to winter coat is a Filson Mackinaw Cruiser exactly like the one below, but if I lived in Buffalo NY my choice would likely be something else.

You should be a little more specific, such as button down, zip down, long, short, bomber, etc.
What sort of temps do you expect to be in? Windy conditions, etc?

Sorry for the lack of information , i live in Sweden and doesn't get that cold like in Canada..but i still want a coat that keeps me warm in -5 - -10 C

Basically i want a coat that looks like the belstaff fenbridge coat which is knee lenght and the materials are shearling. I don't want to buy a coat or jacket that looks like everyone else , in Sweden everybody has the same coat , parka , jacket because they all buy from the same stores.

The fenbridge model is so unique that i really love it , but it hasnt have to be shearling either it can be wool also..the only thing i am looking for is a coat that looks like the fenbrigde.

The model you mention looks to be modeled on a dispatch riders coat, but in Shearling in stead of the normal canvas or rubber

I think Rag & Bone did a tweed wool coat in this same style a couple of seasons ago too, and I saw a raincoat version quite recently, however its not a 'normal' style you tend to see in such heavy material.

So you want a buttoned and belted long shearling coat.. that's nothing you see too often. Most of the big fashion brands such as Belstaff use very thin shearling btw, so you may want to try on that Belstaff coat and see how warm it actually is before you buy it. For temperatures of -10°C I'd get myself a Woolrich or canada Goose jacket btw and not some 3000 Dollars fashion piece..

Agree that this Belstaff is likely aimed at comfort rather than functional warmth.

Not a popular name here due to thier history but I know Simmons Bilt did a raft of longer sheepskin jackets along these lines last year, I think some were a colboration with a designer brand but don't recall which - I saw a batch in a sale earlier in the year.They also sell this. They might be able to modify something and make you a jacket based on that design if neither of those appeal.

My three ...

Pike Bros N-1 (the perfect winter job for dry conditions)
Schott 740N Peacoat or an original .. though I think the Schott is a better jacket TBH
Filson Double Mackinaw Cruiser

if it's really awful out .. ventile or goretex and down can't be beaten IMHO.

Shearling is warm but heavy (though I do love my ANJ-4's)
Leather just isn't warm enough an is super heavy when wet and loses all it's thermal capacity ( wool does not)

just MHO .. having tried and tested most

Belstaff is generally overpriced fashion stuff. This site is about classic era, high quality items and reproductions. Not fashion. But most fashion steals their ideas from classic era clothing. Welcome.

Maybe stay a while and read some posts - it may change your life and enlarge your view of what is cool. We all have to start somewhere and at some point almost everyone finds that fashion is like junk food. It hits the spot but it fails to provide real nourishment. And other poetic tosh like this.

Welcome! I don't think you are in the wrong forum. As Seb Lucas said, most of fashion's ideas come from classic era clothings. In fact, fashion also rinses and repeats its trend, albeit perhaps in different materials. Have a look around the sites suggested by the members, like Aero, Simmons Bilt etc and you will find that modern day fashion is very much based on classic designs. For example, most of Belstaff's jackets are based on (and in fact are very much similar to) traditional jacket designs which have been around from varying times since the 1900s.

I understand that you may wish to look different and that you want to standout from other people as most people buy their stuff from the same stores, either luxury or high street. A classic look can be outstanding as well, both figuratively and literally.

At one time Belstaff was high quality motorcycle and field gear, not so much anymore. The company was bought out and now leans more towards the high dollar fashion crowd, without the substance it once had. Lots of better choices out there for your money, although that particular style may be a bit tough to find, and as mentioned earlier, might be difficult to wear if made from real heavy weight material.

My perfect winter coats have been, for the last 30 or so years, long wool overcoats. Through careful shopping, I manage to find them in beautiful shape in thrift stores at about a tenth the price of new. And at those prices, I can always keep one as backup.
