Wish we'd had something as cool as a campaign hat. While we loved being 'different' (being in a coastal village, we were one of a very tiny number of Troops designated as 'Sea Scouts'), the dorky Sailor Hat was alwaYS a pain.
I was in Scouts in the 1970's and we had those silly looking red berets (which I never purchased). We also had ball caps which wasn't that bad. I own a campaign hat now, but haven't done any scouting in 4-5 years now.

If I was a leader now, I'd be tempted to buy one and give it my best R Lee Emery.... :D

I remember those red berets from an episode(? Or was it the movie-length pilot that told the same story as the full-length of Season One?) of Battlestar Galactica where they take the kids to Earth for the first time and, misunderstanding the local culture, end up uniforming them asscouts when thery go looking to buy 'earth clothes' for them. Scouts in the UK & Ireland (apart from the three or so Sea Scout troops with our dorky sailr hats) wore green berets, I think they still do. We did once pitch a uniform redesign to our troop leaders, but it was considered to be "too paramilitary". Which mattered in Norhtern Ireland in the eighties! ;)

I'm a Scout leader now! (shortly to be properly warranted and everything)
This still strikes me as funny because ...well... goth Scout leaders is inherently funny.
Spent most of my Saturday in a canvas pup tent older than I am, in the tipping rain, helping ardent young men to bake apples. I'm like the cool den mother. Less Akela than Honey Badger....

Hi
The Troop where my son got his Eagle in 2005 was just kicked out of their church. US Scouting was handed a $2.7 Billion settlement to pay, so they're passing on a lot of the costs to the chartered organizations. The churches are dropping Boy Scouts apparently. I've taken Boy Scouts, 4H, and NRA youth protection training and Boy Scouts is the best and makes the most sense.
