Not yet. ;) My goal for 2006 is to learn how to make and renovate hats. I suspect it will be a couple years before I advertise the service though. Maybe in 20 years I'll be as good as Art...if I work really hard.

Aaron , all you need is the hat stand and you will be in business .
Good luck.:cool2:

Yes, so the hunt continues. Actually with blocks, flanges and any other hatter tools I don't think the hunt will ever end. :) Keep me in mind if you come across anything you don't need.

You have to post what you do with the blocks and flanges.

I'm buying a new steamer this week so hopefully it won't be long before I start practicing.

A public and sincere thank you to Art, Besdor, Fedora and MTHatter for their help and advice. I've been bothering them with questions and they've been nothing but extremely helpful with sources and advice.

Cheers,

Here's a pic of the flanges and blocks. A couple were so dry they cracked during shipping, a couple need some work and some look like they were just used. Very happy with the purchase!

New ? There is one person in MO that makes flanges . Get a copy of the Hat Life . If you need more info , I'll try to find out his name. The problem is that it's 125.00 per flange . But if your in it for the long run then it's worth it .:cool2:

Nice find Aaron!...and nice shop too. If you will help me identify one on the hats in the photo. What is the grey hat above the two open crowns(Squatters maybe) in the foreground behind the chair. I've been looking for good photos of the Stylemaster, and thinking the gray hat could be it?..thanks

That is no problem on the flanges if they are good one. Many get 175.00 for a flange, or higher. JW and Lamode both make blocks and flanges, with JW using poplar for the blocks. I dunno what he uses for the flanges, but the really nice flanges of yesteryear were made of walnut. I own several of those. On the hat blocks, I have yet to see a modern block that is as durable as the vintage ones. The trouble is due to the modern guys having to use two or even 3 pieces to make the block. All of my vintage blocks, are one piece, a cross section of a poplar tree. Unlike the new ones, these will not come apart at the seams. It is getting harder and harder to find good vintage blocks, although I bet there will be some at that auction in Missouri. Fedora

The two open crown and the one above them is the Squatter. The style above that is the Stylemaster.

There are at least a couple companies in Great Britain and Europe that make blocks and flanges too. I brought my Hat Magazines home last night and forgot to bring them back in. I'll try to post their info tonight.

OK.. thanks, What I thought might be the Stylemaster turns out to be a Squatter you bashed yourself. I'll give you a call Monday. I want to try one of the Akubra's (bound edge and not too high crowned) I'm still interested in the Stylemaster, but it's hard to see in the photo. Thanks, PW
