There's very definitely a fetishisation of "Made in Japan" in the vintage repop industry that often seems to justify the high prices (are these things really so pricey in Japan itself?). It reminds me of a time when "Made in America" on a guitar was assumed to mean the quality couldn't be bettered. Now - certainly outside the US, Made In Japan guitars are seen as magically better or at least equal to the US made items, while Korea is fast catching up. Doubtless one day "Made in China" will be seen as a badge of quality.
A Schott is pricier than a similar FCL. You would be surprised if you take a look at the price of Langlitz in Japan. A pair of same style Horween CXL Attractions engineer boots cost way more than the regular horse-butt one.
Teacore HH Schott and FCL Leon (I'd think they are comparable e.g. both high quality veg-tanned HH and they are as far as I know not shiniki)

Although that FCL Leon is past season's and FCL has since raised its price, the price of the current season cross zip leather jackets are all just under 180,000 yen.
I merely wanna show that there is definitely a market/demand in Japan for cheaper better fit locally made copies of the originals.

Isn't that the priciest Perfecto Schott has ever released, only available in Asia? I think it's over 2000 dollars?

Only slightly more expensive than the CXL one but the CXL one was launched a few years ago. CXL was sold at 174,900 yen in Japan and taking into account inflation, I don't believe this limited one is pricier than the CXL one.

I don't believe Schott has ever released a CXL Perfecto in Japan so I guess you are right. On the other hand it would be unfair to compare a chrome tanned Schott 613HH to a FCL, wouldn't you agree?

I am a little late on the Aero, Schott comparison. Around here, Schott mostly plays second fiddle to Aero for the most part.

How many documented zipper failures on the Aero compared to zipper failures on the Schott?

Schotts seem to "get ridden hard and put away wet" in the real world. I would say more people "use" their perfectos than other brands. Many perfectos have survived bar fights, mosh pits, and motorcycle mishaps. I see more patches and pins on them than the other brands combined.

Perfectos are high mileage workhorses. Tons of 50 to 60 year old examples out there. Schotts are battle tested.

I just shed a tear reminiscing about the countless bar fights, occasional mosh pit and lone MC mishap. Memories of a well-spent youth. Love it. And yes, some jackets are built for real world “use”, a big reason I love LW and Vanson. I’ll own a FL & Thedi at some point (pieces of art imo) but for “battle” give me a LW lol. I appreciate stellar equipment. Vanson too.

One such 613 I won't ever quit regretting selling. Dude that sold it to me told me it's been to about 100 punk rock concerts and look at it.

You could tell the jacket's been thru just about everything, yet not a single stitch was out of place, let alone anything worse. I mean, freaking zipper tapes managed to fade to brown while the leather was intact.

I can’t quite get a Schott to fit me perfectly. Good enough, but I’m less discerning than others. But it’s impossible to argue that their leather doesn’t age spectacularly.

I never had a Schott jacket and only know that of a friend from years ago. I would say that my Aero CR made of CXFQHH is in no way inferior to that. Bulletproof, but due to the lack of freedom of movement, certainly nothing for a bar fight.

Kidding aside, that’s a major part of it all right? Not just the leather, not just the construction. Finding the right pattern for actual “use” is more important for certain jackets. I have an Aero and love it. It will always be with me. But for certain activities other options work better for my build, body type, whatever.

You're absolutely right. I had probably misunderstood it and only related it to the stability.

Not at all, I didn’t mention pattern earlier and should have. Cheers. I saw you kayaking in an earlier post. I do quite a bit of that along south Florida’s intercoastal and mangroves. I like to sneak up on yachts full of practically naked women and say hi.

Then you should switch to a SUP. Then you have a better view ;) Mine is a SUP, but looks very similar to a kayak.

I see. I need something faster. Some of the channels where I go are full of boats not adhering to speed limits, kicking up major wake. Plus, there are gators/crocodiles where I go. A SUP can get hairy lol.

This comment alone makes me so fed up with the current lockdown/COVID thing. Nor bars, no mosh pits and really no perspective of going to a rock show at all. Man, I would even break out my Perfecto if that were to change anything.
Sorry for derailing this thread. Just hit me full force...
