Schott Bros Inc G1 USN Jacket

Has any one had any experience with a service G1 from this maker? If so, what what did you think? Considering one as a 'beater'. I know that they are not the most collectible :-D Year of manufacture 1998.

Hey BN,

I've never had a Schott, but I know that there was a world of difference between my 1992 G-1 and my 2004 G-1. The first was completely functional if not luxurious. The later jacket was kind of rubbery and shapeless.

I have one from the 80s. Heavy leather, synthetic collar, so it never changes hue. It is basically a motorcycle jacket made for the navy. I just tried it on, have a ways to go on my diet!

If you want a 'beater' G-1, why not pick up an E-series?
That's why I bought mine.
Much cheaper than a Schott.

I don't know how they were in the 80s, but mine was not bad in the early 90s...I'd say as nice as any of the late 60s era and better than the one early 70s that I got on the Bay.

It seems that the cowhide 70s and, from my personal experience, the rubbery 2000s on would be jackets to avoid.

BN that shot I posted of my buddies and I getting our jackets, was in 90....that jacket is the one I was referring to.

The Schott is listed as a USN issued one from 1998 and from pictures looks mint. I did a bit of brief research which suggested these Schott G1's started and finished in 1998. Sizing came up well with 21" shoulders (which I need....if it was measured correctly). It's quite pricey though & I would prefer something with more vintage ideally.

My 1972 Star Sportwear G1 is a lovely jacket but slightly snug in the shoulders (20") which becomes apparent when worn for protracted periods. Given the number of flight jackets I own, 2 G1's would be very modest. My main criteria for a second jacket is that it's service issue with shoulders of 21" and isn't rubbery and shapeless.

Looked into a 48 Ralph Edwards a couple of weeks ago but the shoulders came in at 20", so that was a no go.

I saw a Schott G1 at a local antique/flee market a a couple years ago, it was an absolute piece of junk, thin, pLastic feeling, I wouldn't even pay the $100 they were asking for it. I ended up with a RE that needed new knits for $69, new knits and good to go. It's not very collectable, but a great jacket to beat around in.
I'd say keep looking.
