Schott 613SH vs Vanson Cycle King fit check (How tight bottom hem is supposed to be on leather jacket?)

Hi all,

I seem to have an anatomical challenge as my torso is rather short so most off the rack jackets fall around my hip. As a result, the bottom hem feels pretty tight.

If I upside to accommodate my hip, then the rest of the jacket would be too long and too loose.

Attached are photos of Vanson Cycle King and Schott 613SH that I am considering.

Vanson Cycle King
- size S
- 24" length
- 18 3/4" sweep/hem

Schott 613SH
- size 38
- 24 1/4" length
- 18 3/4" sweep/hem

I could spin both jackets around by twisting my waist as if you are doing the twist dance. But they feel a bit too snug on my hip.

I don't know if any jacket markers out there makes off the track jacket that are 22" to 23" long and/or with a wider sweep/hem with reference to the corresponding size.

I need to shorten the sleeves a bit on either one and that's easy to accomplish.

But overall, do they look too long and too tight around my hip?

I might have to go down the "made to measure" route.

Thanks
PW

Visually, they work.

You don’t seem to have enormous hips/waist, and I know of the 613SH that it doesn’t come with a particularly small hem, so it has to be that your torso is indeed shorter than the norm.
Have you tried pushing The hem over your hip bone, or is that a stupid idea?

It looks as if both jackets fit you well. Obviously, if either is uncomfortably tight at the hem, you will either be more inclined to wear them unzipped or wear something else. Many of us have challenges finding a standard pattern that fits well. I think you are onto something though in looking for an off the rack jacket in the ~22" length or a large hem opening.

But the C2 is sized 36, 38 and etc whereas the cycle king is alpha sized and in this case a size S.

I had tried the C2 in size 38 in the past, the sweep/hem seemed similar to the cycle king in terms of width but the chest and arms are too roomy for me.

Maybe I need to try to find a size 36 C2 to try. Vanson doesn't stock size 36 so unfortunately I won't be able to order it and return it if it doesn't work out.

Vanson C2 should be shorter in the same size and they’re off rack and returnable.

My Vanson C2 is tag size 36 with back length 23.75" and hem opening of 17.5". Relatively more tapered than my Schott 618. For reference, my height is 5'9". So it looks as if the H-D/Vanson Cycle King is cut on a similar pattern as the C2 in length, but with a more generous hem opening.

I think the jacket look very good. Remember, those jackets are very stiff and do take some time to break them in. You have picked two of my favorite jackets. I am still in the hunt for an older production medium cycle king. Friend, life is short. Just rock those jackets. In three years of wear, reevaluate and go from there.

Polarwhite, I think either works, but prefer the Schott. I dont know if it’s the high armholes or just the cut of the jacket but it seems to be sitting a little higher up on your body and making the bottom hem work better. Jacket length is a funny thing and sometimes the measurement doesn’t tell the whole story. My 618 looks a bit short, my 613sh a bit long and there’s hardly a half an inch difference in back length between them.

The schott looks just right. The cycle king is acceptable.
Are you sure banson is not stocking 36? Call them. I bought a 36 c2 about 5 years ago. They sent me voth the quilted and rayon lined and told me to choose one and mail the other back.

Agree that PolarWhite's jackets fit him well. We all want an even better fit but so difficult to get an off the rack jacket that ticks all of the boxes. I agree with

I have a Schott 618 that seems to be similar to the OP's 613. Mine in size 38 does measure a bit shorter. Maybe more measuring differences than pattern differences (?). I'm guessing his small Cycle Champ is comparable to size 36.

I agree with others that the two you’ve got now looks good. But if you want shorter, and less taper, maybe look at the Y’2 PR-58, it’s slim short. But this model only in Japan so non returnable. The western dealers only carries the expensive sumi dyed leather version at double the price.

Thanks for posting your size 36.

The jacket looks perfect on you!

You are right, it seems that the cycle king has a similar pattern as the C2 with the exception of the hem being wider.

I don't think I can zip up in a size 36 C2 based on those measurements.

Good point about breaking in effect. If it relaxes just a little bit around the hem it would totally work. Currently it feels as if someone is constantly grabbing my hip slightly but maybe it's something I will get used to once I wear it more frequently.

Yes I feel the same way about the Schott, that is, despite the fact that it's longer it looks shorter so to speak probably due to the higher arm holes as you stated.

Yes I am sure as I did call them and they don't have any size 36 to send me.

The C2 has quite a taper to the waist and if it strikes at the hip area, is likely to be tighter than your Cycle Champ. That is a great looking jacket by the way. With the fit you have with it, I would definitely wear and enjoy. Personally, I don't wear my leather jackets zipped that often for casual wear.

Too bad that there are not more jacket makers offering a short option. Seems more common to see longer options with standard lengths.

Thanks for recommending the Y’2 PR-58. According to the size chart, size 38 might do the trick. It basically has the same measurements as my Allsaints. Please see attached.
