I'm seeing these types of products out- Scent sprays or lotions that are supposed to help with curbing cravings for carbs- including chocolate cake and desserts, improve your mood and increase feelings of happiness and invigorate to gain a competitive edge in athletics or the workplace.
Although I've never bought any lotion or sprays for this purpose, I"m absolutley hooked on my hand and body lotion that smells strongly of tangerines...which really does seem to perk me up!

I've mentioned them before, but Demeter makes oils, perfumes, etc. based on scents of everything, including a LOT of food and drink. I own a few, and they're heavenly. The Gin and Tonic spray is my favourite "clean smell" ever, as odd as that sounds :)

I can see how this type of thing can work. I like to cook and by the time I'm done I'm usually sick of the sight of whatever it is I'm making and don't want to eat it lol

For a minute there I thought,...

Scientology!? But then I realized we are talking about olfaction here.
I read somewhere that our sense of smell is somehow strongly linked to our subconscious, so certain smells are thought to have a profound affect on us.
I'm not sure but maybe they do? Maybe we sense smells more acutely than we think we do? Maybe our sense of smell has had filters added over time to prevent sensory overload, so the effects of imperceptible scents really do have an affect? [huh]
This warrants more research on my part,....

Have you smelled the new John Travolta, Tom Cruise and Kirsti Alley collections? They are out of this world!

One of the theatre supply catalogs we get at work has cans of prepared popcorn scent -- apparently theatres that don't actually prepare their corn fresh like to put one over on the patrons by diffusing the aroma of corn popping throughout their lobbies by plugging these cans into their ventilation system. Puts folks in a noshing mood, as the theory goes.

My father worked briefly for a bread company where he said they sprayed the outside of the wrappers with Fresh Baked Bread smell to reassure shoppers the loaves were "fresh out of the oven," even though they'd been sitting on a truck for days.

You cannot trust your nose these days. Caveat Emptor.

Awww... I hope not! But that would explain how it smells like popcorn everywhere, but I've never personally eaten it there... and I have an annual pass! lol The best Disneyland smell is the air conditioner in Pirates of the Caribbean. Least, I think it's the air conditioner [huh]

mmmm, that slightly musty smell. i love it! now that i think of it, i've also read that d-land doesn't even sell popcorn, or other snacks that are horridly messy. it's been several years since i've been though, so i can't remember.

and to stay on topic..... i've never tried the craving-curbing scents, but i give my cat Bach's Rescue Remedy (flower essences) when she's stressed out and it totally calms her down. :D

I remember one of the things my mother taught me was when selling a house, bake a loaf of bread in the oven when people come to look...supposedly it makes the house feel more welcoming [huh]
I wish there was something to curb the smell of cooking hamburger...to this day I can't stand the smell of it!!!
citrus; I think this really does work in making you feel more 'awake'...I bought this fagrance spray for the house (lemony scent) and it does seem to help a bit with the whole morning routine [huh] or maybe it was that extra cup of coffee:)

There is some debate in the scientific community regarding the effect of scents on memory and emotions. The idea is that since the olfactory nerves in the brain are closely associated with the limbic system and the hippocampus, that scent is associated with emotions.

What this means to us is that warm cookies smell good and make us more comfortable, than say--smelly trash cans. Most people have more fond memories of cookies (or some other "good" smell) than of negative smells. I suppose it could backfire if a person had a traumatic cookie experience, but mostly it works out.

Also, there is aromatherapy which is somewhat integrated into mainstream medicine in France apparently. The idea there is that oils have healing properties, but this is not necessarily just related to their scent, but also to their chemical makeup. For instance, Tea Tree oil used as an antiseptic.

All the same if grapefruit makes you happy and alert and vanilla makes you relaxed and sleepy, then it makes sense to use the grapefruit soap/lotion in the morning and the vanilla stuff at night.

I've smelled some of the sprays that are supposed to help with cravings, they smell pretty bad, so they might do something Or you could just sit next to the cat box/dumpster/chemical plant and lose your appetite (actually for me the fake butter smell at the theater is enough to make me lose my appetite).

lol Nothing like an unappetizing odor to ruin one's appetite.
I suppose the fragrance industry is of course working on this very diligently, so
I expect to see an aftershave that drives women crazy,...maybe something with a chocolate scent? ;)
