I wear a scarf from J Press. It's a wool scarf with purple, gold and black stripes running the length of the scarf. J Press makes a line of scarfs with colors that are taken from various schools/universities. It's a rather British tradition. I think it's a great way to add a splash of color to my wardrobe.
I wear my scarf over my suit jacket and under my overcoat. I usually just drape it over the back of my kneck just like you have done in your picture. But if it is very cold, I will toss one end back over my shoulder so I cover up the front of my neck as well.
I think a lot of how one wears a scarf depends on the purpose. If it's a fashion statement, just about anything goes. However, if it's going to be practical because of the weather, you want to wear it so that cold winds do not get down the collar. That's been my experience anyway.
