It's so hard to take a good picture of myself, especially when my smile goes all sideways when I'm trying to fake one.

Scarf anyone?

I love scarves. I knit at least a few every year. I'm going to start finding vintage patterns for them, though. If I ever find any and make them I'll post pics.

The scarf looks good with the leather jacket (A-2 or A-1?).

Back in the mid eighties I had my sister make me one exactly like the one that Tom Baker wore as Dr.Who. I don't know that I'd wear one quite so long now... ;) I'm heading to Tokyo for Christmas and it will be chilly so I'll likely be sporting one with my A-2 (No, it has not arrived yet,but I'm told it's on the way...)

Good point Sefton. Thanks for bringing this up Matt. Scarfs are great, and anyone can make one. They are about the easiest thing to make. With just a little bit of added work, a scarf made at home can be better than anything you can buy, especially if your looking for a certain kind of look. I find it darn near impossible to find the right scarf to complete a look that I want, let alone the right material.

I?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢ve never knit one though, I can imagine that is a whole lot more time than sewing one together.

BTW, i'm working on getting an avatar of me instead of other pictures, but being the one behind the camera, it is tough to get a shot of myself that I like.

I have a few cashmire ones that are great. Seem to be a lot from scotland.

My mom weaves a few when she gets time. I'd go with a woven one over a knitted one as it's more dense and less bulky.

I have an AAF silk scarf that has my Solo date embroidered on it that I wear with my flight jacket sometimes. I also wear my Clan's Tartan (Cameron) scarf with most of my clothes. A scarf just adds the right flair to your outfits.

I have lots of scarves, mostly silk, plus a few wool that will come in handy in Iowa.

My silk scarves are in plain, pretty colors, and also some paisley and other colorful and pretty prints. One has a design and look not unlike the one Matt is wearing.

My favorites are a navy-on-navy polka dot scarf and a long, white aviator-type scarf with tassels. I got many of them off e-bay, some in department stores. Some are label names, some are not. Some are the size of handkerchiefs, a couple big enough to use as shawls.

I avoid the $200 scarves for I fear I will lose one somewhere. It is one thing to lose a $30 scarf, another to lose one for which you paid big bucks...

You can never have enough scarves....

From past dealings with this company, it's hard for me to recommend US Wings. I'd be cautious ordering from them. You might be okay with ordering a scarf, but I've seen subpar leather that has been shipped out and escaped quality control.

Like neckties, scarves are a great way to add a bit of color to an outfit. I usually dress in a lot of browns and khakis and just adding a blue or red scarf really brings the look to life. I like silk or silk like materials because I can wear one all day without cooknig my neck. Some of the large size western "wild rags" can make a great scarf alternative. They're retangular and can be folded and worn around your neck as a short scarf if you like to go for the open scarf look.

I agree that, for general purposes, one should exercise caution when dealing with US Wings, but it's pretty hard to botch a scarf.

I happen to have both a Flightsuits and a US Wings scarf. The US Wings is about an inch shorter, slightly darker, and has a thicker, rougher weave. Largely, I choose whichever one I happen to grab.

Garcia Aviation is offering some decent repros. Vintage WWII scarves aren't all that difficult to find, either...ebay is a good source, you just have to be diligent in hunting.

I have 3 silk scarves and one knit, the silk ones are all white. One is a bias-cut and tasseled scarf that my grandpa left when he passed away, probably from the '30s. Another is one I picked up from Art, very '30s deco, satin stripes running through it. The last is a repro AAF embroidered job, not spectacular, but nice. The knit is just a cheap brown one that I got from Burlington Coat Factory.
