Just thought I'd post this here as a heads up to members. A few days ago I started getting 2 different pop up's from my task bar telling me my computer was infected with a virus and I needed to get it removed. Of course it sent me to a specific site to buy their program to get rid of it. I recognized it as a scam but it got by my Norton Internet security and deeply implanted itself in my computer. It implanted the file names of "mclk.exe" and "stdole3.tlb" in my system and I could not delete them with out extra help. The pop ups would continue constantly and if I logged on to the internet they would connect to other sites, some of an adult nature.
I got help from bleepingcomputer.com to download roguescanfix_setup.exe and smitRem to finally purge my computer of these pop ups. I found out there are a number of these bugs out there. I'm not a computer guru who knew what to instantly do, so it was a pain for me to do, but I finally got them purged.

Thanks.
I had one over Christmas calle SpyAxe. It did the same thing.
It put an icon like a Windows Update icon in the sys tray, and kept popping up FROM there.

I went through a lot of trouble finding fixes for it, one of them being SmitRem

I had this happen last night, a couple of popups blasted through and tried to tell me I had spy ware and what I could buy to get rid of it. I think one tried to install something. The disconcerting thing was I was only on the Fedora Lounge website!

I ran an AVG scan and Ad-Aware just to make sure nothing got installed. But where did this come from?

If you know the name and the location, (usually the folder, Windows/sysem 32) you can start your PC in safe mode, (tap the F8 key as it starts up) go directly to the malware and delete it. Then be sure to empty your recycle bin before restarting your PC. Has worked on several occasions for me.
You must have a good firewall/antivirus in place to prevent installation of these pests, or if they can not, at least they will identify the offending software so it can be removed.
