Sartorial Objections

- Boxers worn above the pant's waistline. Double points if it's white and has skid marks. I don't think they look tough, they look like they can't dress themselves.
I do that... it can't really be helped. But I doubt you'll ever see it. My jeans are low in rise, which I guess everyone heres hates. But they don't sag.

One's undergarment should never exceed the outergarments.
We think no one notices but as a human moves, so do their clothes.
Something to think about..

I don't think 1-2" of boxers showing is going to start a third world war. :p Besides the fact that right now I'm wearing shirts tucked into them anyways to layer up.

There is nothing wrong with critiquing here. This is a hypothetical conversation about general likes and dislikes. No one is singling out anyone else for derision. Discerning people make decisions, have opinions, and pass judgement on some behavior. On one level or another, this is what we do.

A wise person realizes that others may see things differently. ;)

I agree. And a pet peeve isn't necessarily a judgement. It's like saying "The Godfather was a junk movie." That isn't a slight to everyone who likes the film, it's an opinion. I like and love many people whose fashion sense often confounds me. Fashion simply isn't that important to many, which is understandable, though the opposite of my take.

And this thread is a hoot to read!

A few of my pet peeves:

Working in fine dining establishments (some of which had dress codes, some which had suggested dress codes) I've seen an awful lot.

I think the worst for me is when people try to dress up and do it in such a way that it's distasteful (trashy); as if they took a wrong turn and meant to go to the fancier strip club.

White gymshoes anywhere other than the gym.

Sports bar fashion.

Hipster gone wrong... when a hipster wears *every* recent score from the Goodwill/Buffalo Exchange all together.

Sloppy Goths. Goth done right can be so striking.

Cheers all!

for me, the hard-core work out kind that gleam white and are styled much like many mini-vans of today.

Chuck Taylors and the kind that Patrick Mcgoohan wore in 'The Prisoner' are not offensive to me in the same way.

It's contextual for me....

I'm not a big fan of the saggy-pants look (though when i was a policeman, it was kinda fun when they tried to run from me) but it's more about where people where a specific item or style.

In seattle, one of my biggest beefs is that people think it's acceptable to wear their North Face ski jacket, and jeans with Merrel boots to El Gaucho, out 1950's-styled steak house. It's not.nthere is a near complete lack of personal style here. It's sad.

If they want to wear that to Dick's drive in (kind of an In-n-Out burger joint) more power to them....but it degrades my experience a bit when i look across my Supper Club and see some guy in a Windows 95 Launch Day t-shirt.

Hence my lack of fear at saying that i think the Indiana Jones look is more than a little disturbing. Trying desparately to look like a movie character. That brings my day down just a touch.

Really, the number of threads, comments, complaints etc. I (and anyone else who's been around here more than 2 seconds) have seen Re: "why won't people stop staring and commenting on my hats?" makes this thread just a bit hypocritical. We cannot possibly complain about the sartorial issues of others until we stop whining about their comments about our own. But we've got style, right, so we're right, right? Or left? eh?

glass houses, stones, lack of throwing. do unto others. errrm, have i got another one? live and let live.

I can't understand that first sentence I made in bold. [huh]

Second, if it "degrades" your experience to look at what other people are wearing... you seriously need to reconsider your personal needs. Sorry, but that sort of attitude comes off to me as just outright snobbery. "Oh! Charles, just LOOK at that man there wearing a t-shirt and shorts in our favourite restaurant. The audacity!" That may seem off-base, but you're doing basically the same thing.

Hmmm, I can see what you are saying.

Some more thoughts: I would find it a tiny bit disturbing if people really thought their opinions were "right" in regards to this. Even though I strongly dislike white gymshoes, I can't for a second believe that anyone who wears them would ever give two cares what *I* think. Why would they?? I can't care what they think about my style. I don't dress for others, I dress for myself. Other people's reactions to it is their deal, not mine. Everyone does what is right for themselves. That's the beauty of difference.

Dressing outside the norm inherently leaves us/people open to criticism; it will strike people as different, and isn't that the point? A few days back I was wearing tall riding boots and a young man came up behind me and said, "Go, go Gadget boots!" and not in an entirely nice way, but it was validly funny. He was wearing pants down to his knees, now obviously our personal styles are opposite, but I don't take that or his remark personally. It seems absurd that I would.

I'm fascinated that this thread has stirred so much up.

It's a hard topic to look at because it can lead to hypocrisy, criticism, and judgment. I think Lady Day put it best when she said, 'lighten up.';)
Cheers!

All well, but you seriously should have told him, "Go go Gadget use a ****ing belt." At least I would have. He pretty much deserves it for forgetting how to be a gentleman toward a pretty lady such as yourself. What goes around, comes around, they say.

Well, I am a huge fan of the "Live and let live" philosophy, but I think this thread stops short of being hypocritical in that respect because I don't imagine that anyone here would walk up to someone and mockingly point out their white gymshoes (or what have you) in public, like the recipients of the hat comments.

People are always talking about my banana, and I just don't get it... lol

The difference is that we don't say anything to the people who look like hobos and bums even if we do have objections. We have the common sense to keep it to ourselves. Its when they open their mouth with a stupid comment coming from where they are that we have a problem. Then that deserves a reply.
I could really care less what they think. Just keep it to themselves and their bare behind, flip flop wearing, Ragedy Andy or Ann clothing. Its comical to get a snide comment from them that's all. There's no whining involved it is laughter. lol lol lol

Regards,

J
