Saggy Pants Trip up Perps

There is an article in the Wall Street Journal about young thieves getting tripped up by the baggy, saggy pants.

An excerpt from "Perpetrator Problem:
It's Hard to Run Away In Falling Trousers" in today's Wall Street Journal, page A1:

Denny Fuhrman, a 58-year-old police officer in Lynnwood, Wash., was escorting a handcuffed suspect to his patrol car one afternoon in 2004 when the youngster twisted free and took off running.

As he bolted, the baggy blue jeans he was wearing fell down around his ankles, sending him tumbling onto the pavement of a busy street. "He was rolling around in traffic, looking like a fish out of water," recalls Mr. Fuhrman.

Mr. Fuhrman's suspect wiggled out of his trousers before getting up from the street and running toward a nearby mall, as the police officer radioed a description to his colleagues: "White male, running, no pants, in handcuffs," Mr. Fuhrman recalls saying. The young man was arrested at the entrance of a J.C. Penney store after Janice Lewis, a 61-year-old passerby, grabbed his shirt collar and held on to him until police arrived.

Hah. Karma.

I see this all the time when heading into the court building downtown. Everyone has to pass through metal detectors and off come the belts - and then the baggy pants start falling.
Very amusing.

If I ever embark on a life of crime, I will a belt, a shirt and shoes. I've seen enough episodes of Cops to think I'll be reasonably successful. How many times are the cameras rolling as the police chase down some guy in baggy jeans and a wifebeater?

Or no shirt at all? Boy, even if I were built like a young Arnold Scwarzenegger I wouldn't go around shirtless in public. Feh.
I think that you shouldn't go around shirtles in public especially if you are built like a young Arnold Schwarzenegger! Very silly looking indeed...lol

I remember an incident in high school, where a kid had stuck a gun in his pants (I'm not sure why), and as he ran away from campus security (for a reason unrelated to the weapon), the gun fell out of his oversized jeans. He may have been in trouble to begin with, but after that he was really in trouble!

I heard somewhere once that the whole baggy clothing 'look' (okay, 'disaster' is a better word) was derived from sloppy-issue prison denims; that is, da boyz who wanted to look tuff and kool took their cue from the prison look.

If that's true, then the turkey mentioned in that article is already trussed up for the pen. :D

Ah, sweet irony.

Whenever I see a dope- er- young fella with his trousers at knee-height, I wish I had a cane to snag it on the (strictly ornamental) belt line and make them fall face flat on the floor. Fortunately, they still wear underpants at the proper height.

They actually use safety pins to secure the falling pants to their underpants! lol

Just saw this on the dinner table when we were having fruit. My godbrother was even laughing his head off. He said it was just ridiculous. And then he realized he was wearing cargo shorts that hung the same way.

Don't know how many of you watch Cops but about half the crooked dimwits they chase and catch are nearly out of their pants by the time they're apprehended......

Cops: yeah, I noticed the same thing as well...on some episodes, it's more like 9 out of 10 people have the jeans around the ankles look going on. It looks like it would be uncomfortable just wearing jeans that way[huh]

Dumba$$ does not even begin to describe the perp in this situation.
I guess the police appreciate the fact most criminals have no common sense. It makes them that much easier to catch.
