I have used it a few times with success. There are glycerine alternatives that are easier to use, and I have read that saddle soap can rot thread over time.
I too have used saddle soap years ago without any apparent trouble. I tried it since my Dad said that was what they used in WW2. But that was then and this is now. If you search the Lounge for "saddle" you'll learn that generally a damp cloth for a cleaning and, if necessary, a light coat of Pecard's for conditioning.
