Saddle shoes

Note the heels on those shoes -- I've never seen anything like that on a pair of saddles.

Me too, serious shoe envy, i love saddles anyway, but i keep looking at that picture and drooling at those heels, maybe that guy that was caught in her bedroom at buckingham palace was a lounger looking for those hot shoes!

My Mom says she had some saddle shoes when she was young that had
clear plastic where the saddle would be, so her socks showed through.

Here she is in 1946. She's wearing the white saddle shoes with the clear plastic
saddles, but you can't see it very well.She says the plastic yellowed after awhile.

Thank you all very much for the tips! I thought about getting some of that shoe stretching spray, but it sounds like I can give the water/alcohol combo a try! Also going to keep my eyes open for the foam, since I've never heard of that before.

Fingers crossed I can find a cobbler! Otherwise, I'm going to invesn those shoe stretchers. Thanks for the link! That's definitely an option

I've also heard you can put a zippo or other plastic bag inside the shoe and fill it with water. Tie the bag in a knot high up and put them in the freezer. The water expands and stretches the shoe. I'm not sure to what extent but i imagine it'd work to a degree

Oh that's a new one, never heard of that, maybe we need a thread on handy hints and tips, if there isn't one already, always my favourite articles to read in vintage magazines or even modern ones come to that!

I've put stretching foam on the shoes I am wearing today and it is a revelation! I have been gradually wearing them in, which has usually meant for half an hour in the morning while I do my hair and makeup, but I have now had them on for 12 hours and counting and they are perfectly comfy!

Thats good i wasn't imagining the foam thing then, i've been having a few senior moments lately. Actually my shoe mender put some synthetic shoes on the stretching machine for me for a couple of days and they turned out great, just for the record and it only cost a few pounds.

Thanks for that, will go and bother the shoe mender for some. Actually does anyone know of any shops in London that sell saddle shoes? Only i'm due for a visit soon. I got mine from Rocket originals, but i do like to have a good try on.

I have also heard rubbing alcohol then put on some thick socks walk around in them for 15 minutes and they should fit but if you have the stretchers you don't have to put up with the 15 minutes of pain.

Just a warning if you do this... actually right now I'm doing it!

The part of my shoe I needed stretched is softening up just fine, but I just took off my sock and noticed the alcohol has melted my red nail polish and its all over the inside of my sock!

Next time I try this I'll take the precaution of removing the polish.

To the ladies who own the Payless saddle shoes:

On a scale of 1 to 10 (1 being painful and 5 being extremely comfortable), how would you rate these shoes?

I'd rate them about a 7 or 8 overall. They feel quite comfortable on and never hurt my feet at all. The only problem is that the bottom part is so hard that my knees end up hurting if I walk a lot on super hard surfaces. They don't provide any support either but that doesn't bother me since most of my shoes don't.

I would also rate them at about an 8. Surprisingly comfy for the cheap price and man-made material. I've worn mine for 8 hour on-my-feet shifts and have come out the same as if I were wearing a sneaker.

The Queen in Saddle Shoes!!!!

i have been googling saddle shoes because i REALLY want a pair, but hesitate to buy them off the internet (esp as the ones i want are not cheap) and i'm almost positive i saw a pair similar to these.

i'm going to have to re-google now to try and find them!

oh yes - i found loads of saddle shoes that were actually golf shoes - wasn't expecting that!

Yup. I also now have tan-coloured stains on the bottom of the socks from the lining of the shoes!
