I've been a big fan of striped sailor shirts since I was a kid and have quite a few in different colors and styles. Recently I discovered an Etsy shop called Telnyashencko in St. Petersburg selling military-issues for $9.99, so I gave them a try. About a week later I received the two I ordered and am very pleased with them. Go up one size.

Always good to hear of another source of Telnyashkas! I've been wearing them for a long time now. First became interested in stripey shirts like that in the early 90s when I discovered the Ramones. Started off with a very nice (but expensive - £30 even then!) Breton shirt that I bought from a mail-order add in the back of the NME, then later on discovered the Russian option in an army surplus store. The variety is great, too - five colours (black, red, green, navy, royal blue), and T, A and longsleeve options!

Do you have a link to the seller. I tried the name:Telnyashencko but could not find. Is this the seller you talking about? https://www.etsy.com/people/dromych

Please advice,
G.

Interesting shirts! Can you post pictures of the ones you received? How do they compare to the Saint James version? (I have two Saint James shirts and love them.)
It's hard to compare these with the St. James, as that company makes several different styles and uses different types of cotton. I can say that these are more fitted (go at least one size up) and, while it has a "boat-neck," the opening is smaller than the St. James. I've also found the St. James to get a bit baggy as you weat them. These feel like they have some stretchiness to them and retain their shape. Of the different types I have I'd have to say that Armor-lux (a French company) make my favorites. Very soft cotton and no fading after several years' wear. These Russian shirts are fine, though they are military-issue. Great deal for the price.

My order came in today, with a pair of socks thrown in.

The color I ordered is "nettle," which is really more like mix of brick red/maroon. I ordered a size L and I typically wear a M.

I like it. It's more form-fitting than my Saint James shirts but the fit is still good. It feels like there's a little spandex in there for stretch. For the price ($18.99 with shipping) I think it's a good buy.

Oh, and based on an adhesive tag applied to the shirt, I believe this is the manufacturer:

The color of the stripes on the telnyashka denote different branches of the Russian military and security forces:

Blue -- Airborne
Black -- Navy (particularly the Naval Infantry, aka "Morpekh")
Maroon -- National Guard of Russia (Rosgvardia), formerly Internal Troops of the Ministry of the Interior (MVD)
Green -- Border Guards
Orange -- Ministry of Emergency Situations (Emercom)

Royal blue is supposedly worn by FSB (Federal Security Service, formerly the KGB) but there is no real information to confirm it. The telynyshka and matching beret are generally associated with Russia's elite forces, and if royal blue is indeed worn by FSB the most likely wearers would be members of Alfa and Vympel Groups, the antiterrorist teams.

I am thinking of buying one from Epic Militaria, I am a 40R (5'9" and 156 lbs) so should I order a L (42) of these instead of a M (40)?
Thanks
