Has one purchased a recent russet colored A-2 reproduction? If so, where did you get it from and were you pleased with the jacket? Thanks.

Russet A2's

Havanna. I've tried on the Aero Anniversary A2 in russet Horse hide and it's a honey of a jacket! Good weight, great colour, tight knits and good texture to the hide. Personally (and I like this option offered by Aero) I'd go for the all-jerky, as I like my grain to be popping out all over the place. Just has more of a vintage feel to it.
The ELC (Eastman) Roughwear 1401 is a fine russet too, but too smooth in texture for my liking (don't think they do a full jerky option), and you need to be sure of the sizing, as they run about a size larger (check with them, as they have been making efforts to slim down their jackets).
RMNZ (Real McCoys) do a fine russet A-2, great weight, good mix of smooth and jerky (and folk here will rave about RMNZ), but I don't like the idea of having Real McCoy on the label, I like an original styled label (just me being pinnickity!).
Buzz Rickson have fine looking A2's, but I have never handled one of the A2's, only the nylon and cotton jackets, which are fantastic!.

Have a look at the list of companies at the top of the WW2 room on the forum (in the REFERENCE LIBRARY) and all the big jacket makers are listed there with their links.

Good luck!

This is a jacket that I wish I hadn't sold. Check the pre war Talon zipper with the rivets and metal tape ends..

Hi, Allen,

I think you'll be ok with the FS russet goat - the color closely matches the Werber in your pics - give that zip a home.

You'll find the shoulders are going to be to your liking also - recommend you get a try on before commiting to a special order.

I just tried on a FS 48 and liked the fit. I have had some unexpected dental problems so don't know about the cash situation right now. I am going to get one though. I really like the goatskin and the look of your jacket ALLOT...Thanks Bill!!!

Russet colored A-2

Hi,
New to this group. Just got a Flight Suits Gibson and Barnes Goatskin russet A-2. It is exactly like my original Rough Wear 18091 in feel and look. Just ordered an Aero (used) Buffalo russet A-2. Should be just like Goatskin with the grain of the leather.

I picked up a russet horsehide A-2 at a place called Kaufmanns West in Albuquequre. They had a rack of A-2 repos on sale and 50 bucks off the sale price. It's an older model from Sporty's Pilot Shop that seems pretty close in details to the higher end repos. The label says it's genuine front quarter horsehide and made in USA. (the salesman didn't even know they had anything but cowhide on the rack) The throat latch is black instead of the issue nickel, the coat hanger is sewn into the lining, not to the back leather panel, and the liner is acetate. The collar points are a bit on the rounded side compared to most of the ones pictured on the A-2 reference page. Other than that, most of the required features are in place, including the collar stand, one-piece back and two piece sleeves. Nice military cut, too.

For a hundred bucks and the right fit, I couldn't pass it up.

(BTW this is my first A-2 purchase and it's all uphill from here.)

Ack! Don't tell me this... I just spent six months talking myself into a really correct A2!

Sounds like you got an amazing find. :cheers1:

ELC Roughwear 1401 in Russet

Eastman RW 1401. This was a particularly nice hide actually (sold it). But should have gone for a size down (they were running at one size too large, although I'm told ELC have corrected this and given their A2's a trimmer cut).

But I thought it was a lovely jacket and everyone who saw it complimented me on it. Even Ken at Aero begrudgingly said it was 'ok,' (which was good coming from 'him!' lol).

EASTMAN RW 1401 PICS.

Hope that helps in some small way :)

Helped me

Thanks for thos pics, Paddy.
Pictures of the ELC 1401 that I've seen vary considerably in color (though that can be a trick of the light, photography, etc.) They seem to vary from brownish, like yours, to quite red.

I'm torn. I love the ELC 1401 for its considerable historical connections, and obvious great looks.
But then I see the Aero jerky hides with all that grain...

I own a Gibson & Barnes (Flight Suits) Historical A-2 in russet horsehide. It's their take on a generic prewar jacket with a collar stand. The general opinion is that their jackets are cut a bit on the full side through the body, but mine fits me quite well, I think. The hide is great, and after about five months of wear it has broken in very nicely, developing some nice grain.

But be forewarned, these jackets are like potato chips -- you can't have just one. I'm currently awaiting delivery of my Aero Indian goat in seal brown with rust knits. Should be here in a couple of weeks! :)

Cheers!

Currently I have two russet A-2s, and ELC Roughwear 1401 and an Aero Real Deal. As much as I love my Eastman, the leather is a bit too smooth. The Aero's raunchy grain is much closer to that that of an original's.
