RUM?!

Having been a Navy man for over 25 years (retired some years back), I prefer rum. A few years ago, I decided to try some better rums (can you say, "I'll never have Bacardi touch my lips ever again!!!"). I settled on a few. What is in my cupboard at the moment:

Gosling's Black Seal
Flor de Caña Grand Reserve
Appleton's V/X

A Cuba Libre is my drink of choice (using key limes if at all possible).

Another rum concoction I recently tried is black rum cake. My last batch used fruit that was soaking in rum for over 11 months. I also add a bit of semisweet chocolate chips, slow bake the thing for several hours, drizzle more rum on it when it comes out of the oven. Wrap in cellophane and foil, refrigerate, and it will keep for years (as if they last that long). Tender, moist, fruity (with a chocolaty hint), and very rummy. Awesome. I make them in small loaves, so I can give them away at Christmas. One batch makes 16 small loaves. Oh my...I need to go unwrap one....AFK!

Ahhh Rum, the first alcoholic drink I ever enjoyed.

I started with Bacardi, but soon realized that stuff is crap and found some good stuff. Appleton's is a fine basic rum, but nothing really special. Some of my favourites are just about anything sold in Cuba (Santiago de Cuba is delicious stuff, and only costs about 5 bucks a bottle) La Tondena, made in Manila, Philippines, and Pyrat xo. Pyrat is absolutely bloody brilliant stuff. You can drink it straight as easy as water it's so smooth and the flavour is phenomenal. It's damn expensive though, at least where I live. Sailor Jerry is delicious and powerful, but for some reason it gives me the rumblies in my gut. I think it's the spice they add. I like Gosling's Black Seal and Lamb's Navy too.

I typically drink rum mixed with pepsi on the rocks, occasionally straight, as with Pyrat. I also enjoy a rum and coffee, especially on a cold winter's evening.

Whenever I meet anyone who says, "I don't like rum", I ask, "Well what kind of rum have you had?". The answer is invariably, "Bacardi" to which I reply, "That's your problem right there."

I've never had anyone fail to fall in love with rum when I introduce them to the real thing.

How about this? El Dorado 21 yo. Very nice, and under $50.00. Not for mixing, mind you.

The 12yo, on the other hand, while still quite nice to sip, is very good for mixing. Back before they changed ownership (and went right downhill), Trailer Happiness did an amazing cocktail called a Jack Fashioned based on El Dorado 12yo, Benedictine and cigar-infused maple syrup. Garnished with a piece of chocolate in the shape of an Eater Island head.

Sailor Jerry is banned from my house. I refuse to accept it, unless you have bought it as a gift. I wouldn't be so churlish as to refuse a well intentioned gift. I get through two bottles a year. One arrives courtesy of Santa, the other comes on my birthday. And if either bottle lasts any longer than a week, it's classed as vintage. Sailor Jerry is so damned moorish. Which is why it's banned.

I love Plantation Rum's 20th anniversary Barbados Rum. If I catch my husband adding this to his cherry Coke, it won't be pretty.

A blend of the company's oldest reserves, this rum is something else. Selected rums aged for long years in the Caribbean are painstakingly blended by our cellar master at Château de Bonbonnet then matured in small French oak casks for a further 12 to 18 months. Double aging gives the rum an incomparably round and creamy palate.

When I was stationed in the Canal Zone (early '70s) we used Ron Cortez for our Cuba Libres. Not a great rum, but the price was right (cheap) and we were interested in quantity not quality at the time.

I am a committed rum drinker. But, living in the UK I find that varieties from the former British West indies to be too sharp for my liking.

Since travelling to France I drink the French, that is to say Martinique and Guadaloupe, rums.

The finest I have ever had (and I think I bought the last bottle for sale in this country) was Kaneche from Guadaoupe. Oh so smooth.

We are lucky here in Australia that we can buy Santiago De Cuba, the Anejo, Blanco and premium 12 years old. These would have to be the best rums in their class I have ever drunk for value, smoothness and flavour. I also like the darker rums like Goslings Black Seal and Myers's. And honourable mentions to Havana Club, Pussers, Zacapa and Inner Circle. I don't like to buy spiced rums. I prefer to add Angustura orange or standard bitters to make my own if inclined.

AdeeC if you like Havana club try Legendario which is better IMHO!....if you can get it there?, you struggle here to be honest but if you're ever in Spain seek it out.

Never tried that one but I expect it will be superb as you say. I will keep an eye out for it. Premium Havana Club appears in dribs and drabs here and also hard to find. Currently I can buy the Havana Club Gran Reserva 15 years old for $199 but I seriously doubt it is much beter value than the Santiago de Cuba 12 years old which sells for about $75.
