Himmler's Ahnenerbe scoured the planet for proof of obscure Arayan links to Germanic ancertory. Hitler actually thought it was a waste of time and resources.
There was also the story of The Spear of Longinus (sp.?) The spear point that a pilgrim in one of the crusades dreamed would be exactly where they found it. Peter the Hermit I believe his name was. The very spear that pierced the side of Christ.
It is said that he who possesses the spear controls the destiny of the world, either for good or for evil. Hitler supposedly took possession of the spear as it was in the Hapsburg family collections in Vienna.
It is very "Indiana Jones", and yet some of it really took place.
I visited Wewelsburg last year. In 2002 I made a point of visiting the spear in Vienna. Ravenscroft wrote a really wierd book about the Spear of Destiny.
I might get this Ahnenerbe pin just cause it has this unreal secret society feel to it...who will know?
I saw this in the paper earlier in the week and thought the same - very Indiana Jonesey
There was also a book that came out about 3 or 4 years ago about another expedition which Himmler had sent to Tibet in relation to "Aryan mythology", but I can't remember what it was called now.
As a small piece of trivia, Himmler signed everything with green pencil. A friend has a directive for the promotion of an SS-General signed by Hitler (his was an appalling scrawl) and there's Himmler's with the green pencil. Nasty document though, gives me the shivers to see those two men's signatures on the same piece of paper.
There was also the story that the bodies of twelve tibetan monks were found in the ruins of the bunker, or somewhere close by. It's the sort of story that ought to be true even if it isn't.
Yeah Smithy Himmler's guys went to Tibet and measured people and took facial impression molds and more. They came to the conclusion that the poeple there were somehow descended from arayans. ??[huh]
That document would be worth plenty on the collector's market too.
