This story is fascinating on so many levels.
Not least of which is the fact that the US Marine Corps veteran, Marvin Strombo, who returned the flag, fought at the battles of Saipan, Tarawa and Tinian. It is hard to imagine what he must have gone through. Now, he looks pretty good for a guy who must be in his 90s and he comes across as a man of humility and honor.
The story is also interesting in describing how they finally located the family of the dead Japanese soldier. The flag is quite a piece of calligraphy and they tracked down the family by analyzing the "good luck" messages written by people from his home town, which led them to a little tea-growing village of 2,300 people in central Japan.
Very emotional when they describe the effect the flag had when it was returned to the fallen soldier's younger brother and sisters. The ghosts of the past still haunt the present.
