This site was recently recommended to me by a friend. Some very nice photos. Its along the lines of Shorpy but with more editorial text. I apologize if its been posted before.

Retronaut

Jo Teeuwisse has several photos on there that really struck me emotionally. I hope I'm not out of line for posting one here. Almost brought tears to my eyes ... and I don't know why. My old dutch heritage, I suppose.

Looks like a great resource - I enjoy the commentary. It's a step beyond Shorpy, which is reverently historical and has a social viewpoint - a classically American use of historic documents.

More to the point, I applaud the mix of respect and irreverence at retronaut - the kind of thing you can get away with more easily in Europe. It reminds me there are people doing things with history - riffing and reflecting on it visually, reading it for common threads with our own humanity, reminding us that beauty is important, too, and timeless.

What a great website. I was just listening to the trombone recording from 1897. It was slightly chilling and sobering to realize that I was listening to something recorded before even the recording of sound itself was common. On another note, I think I sort of prefer "Retronaut" to "Atavist," if we're looking for a name for vintage enthusiasts, but I hope I don't derail the topic... I mean, I like it, myself.
