Retro or Classic?

Well, some things made today which are made in a "Classic" style may become collectable in years to come... in fact, they are right now! If one goes into an antique shop, you'll find lots of reproduction Coca Cola items also, reproduction radios and some other silly things that should not be in an antiques shop. The stuff today that is made with quality and craftsman’s ship will become collectable and valuable as time goes on.

A great example is of the furniture and lighting I used to represent wile working at Historic Lighting. The featured furniture there was Warren Hile and he made beautiful Arts and Crafts furniture also, classic early period Monterey furniture. His process is just like the original manufactures used. He did everything the old fashioned way... used the same kind of woods and techniques... Also, Caledonia Studios in Berkley is a great example of this... it would take them 6-8 weeks to make one "Stickley" rocker. Prices were all over 1000. And up! These pieces are not retro; they are considered classics because they were made in the classic tradition as the originals.

Coca Cola is another fine example, in the 80's they were chastised because they changed the original formula, so, they went back to it and then called it "Coca Cola Classic" the only two things different from the original is a lower count of phosphoric acid and the use of corn syrup in trade of cane sugar.

Classic to me is something original from a time period or, something that is being made today the same way it has been for the last 100+ years. Retro is just tacky revival stuff that isn't 100% true to original items, also, cheap manufacturing is a part of it.
