James, I had no idea you were a Bugatti man as well. :eusa_clap Funny, though, I thought you'd be more of a Type 35

I am not picky. If you want to give me one of those, I'll take it. ;) :p

The only thing I will say is that I have deepest respect for the members of The Fedora Lounge, the Bartenders and especially the rules here.

For example, I rarely do I agree with Lizzie, however, I respect her immensely. So much so that I consider her input, possibly research what she is saying and then formulate an answer. This all takes time and thought.

I treat everyone here in the same manner. In fact I have met and communicated with people in person or otherwise in The Fedora Lounge that I consider friends.

Hopefully what I share some find informative, humorous or insightful. Naturally, not everyone will share my perspective. Most importantly, however, I discuss issues not people or personalities.

However there is one thing you can count on I value everyone here, I enjoy the playful bantering that goes on and I take seriously that which I should.

I dunno. A Venn Diagram can get complicated:

Keep adding groups and I am going to get really confused or run out of space really fast.

Put me in the confused segment and don't add any more segments - you have about got it covered already!

BTW Doran is a gentleman - rare to see such a considered response when the blood is up!

retro extremists???

Ok I am kind of new here and I seem to have landed in this thread in the middle of a row... oops!

I don't like retro extremists and I like atavist less... sooooo

Not wishing to add it to it I did a bit of scholarly research ...i.e. google !

And I found a name I like that fits the bill

Savant ...

or more precisely scholar of retro ... savant de retro ....

but i would happily be called a 'savant' ...

Please don't shout at me if a name has been chosen already ... just trying to help!!!

My Venn Diagram was just an example that I found but I can see that there might be some apropos parts. :p ;)

I thought you had actually sat there and scribbled that out - like dinerman did in answer to another of my stupid questions in another thread! :eusa_doh:

We'll make a section for those that feel unwelcome.

Sorry, Chevallier formed, tongue in cheek perhaps, created the corner booth or some such. Got slammed by and shut down by all the people who didn't want to be there, but wanted to have the right to or some such. I still don't understand what all the fuss was about on that one.

Jack, I tell you what. Let's write the article. You write it or you and I write it, just to get it up there now. I'm surprised that book "Swing" by Vale isn't already discussed up on Wikipedia because that book more or less does what you want your article to do. Is it?

We can discuss both the vintage scene in general as well as the levels of involvement, which, it seems to me, should most reasonably be divided into three, and these provisional names seem most reasonable:

a.) Lifestyle Atavist
b.) Anachronist or Vintage Buff or Vintage Enthusiast
c.) Occasional Vintage Wearer

We can discuss temporal out-of-place-ness, love of the past, horror of present culture, discuss that last horror's connexion to the punk scene.

I don't mean to bug you with the use of the word "we" -- do it all by yourself if you like; I just want it to get done.

I think vintage is the best general term, although I don't see exactly how it might be modified by distinguish different levels of committment.

As in He is vintage. He is a vintage guy. That girl in the stockings is a vintage chick. Anyone that affects a true, or close to true, vintage look, for a minute, a day, or a lifetime.

Maybe 100 % vintage Hey, how about the "100 percenters"?

or fulltime vintage. Noun could be vintagist.

That Senator jack guy is a full time vintagist. I saw him working on his mustang broken down on the side of the road, and he was cursing like my dad used to.

Actually you are right. People will take it the wrong way if it is a list.

Sorry if I came off too curt!

Venn diagram has my support.

I think that might be too sensitive. I am sure you would cringe if I said too overly sensitive;) If there were to be an article, and a list of types of involvement, well, obviously, there will always be one person that falls between 1 and 2, or 2 and 3. so it might be pointless.

However, if one did write a list, i see no reason why it would not start at one end of the spectrum and end at the other, as in, 1, full time, 2, part time, 3 rarely, 4 want to. etc

Or, if anyone cares, 1 those who want to, 2, those who rarely...

I can't imagine anyone saying hey, he called what i am 3. i should be 1. I mean, is 1 best or is 10 best. Depends on the scale. And a list has no scale anyway.

HUNDRED PERCENTERS?!!!

I fear that that moniker has already been taken, too!

By a phonograph record company, in Indiana.

Well, except maybe for some rockabilly types, aren't we the opposite of hard core bikers?

The whole point of the Venn diagram is that it eliminates the hierarchy but shows a full variety of involvement!

And I hardly think is becumbent of you to judge anothers' sincere response to a considered reply ..

A list with no scale is a pointless endeavour......and would you rather be three than a five on a scale of seven with one being lowest?

And finally, your " I can't imagine anyone saying..." is only the limit of your imagination not others!

^^ ^ that's the funniest thing I have read all night ... and for sure, if the papers bothered to write about this forum and it's members, that is EXACTLY what they would say - in London anyway! SlyGI - you have a talent - it may well be misused but nonetheless it is a talent! :eusa_clap :eusa_clap

The 100% quartette issued ditties like "The Bright Fiery Cross", "The Mystic City" "Long Klucker" and "The Jolly Old Klansman". Now, of course these records were products of their time, but one wonders whether these discs are yet obscure enough so that the appellation "100%" is entirely free from unfortunate connotations.

The Klan adopted the term "100 percenter", meaning, of course "100 percent American" (as opposed to immigrants, especially Catholics and Sons of Abraham, who they assumed must be "Hyphenated Americans" with divided loyalties. I yet live in a former hotbed of Klan activity, and am perhaps more familiar with the 1920's iteration of this group than are most folks.

I never thought of Klu Kluxers as BIKERS.

Yeeeaah, I guess we can scratch that one. I google the word and didn't see anything in the first few, but better not take a chance. I wasn't serious about that phrase though. I do kind of like vintagist and full time vintagist.

That may be a great term for a lot of Loungers. In fact, I think it is perfect in that context. But for the specific (very small?) subgroup of Loungers that a term is being sought for and by, and that has been explained numerous times in this thread, it doesn't really describe the affliction.

And an affliction it is as the sufferers have attempted to point out many times.

For the rest of us it may be that we want a term too. In fact, given the enthusiasm this thread has generated that's probably abundantly obvious, but that's not where this thread started.

Maybe it's time for this thread to either be retired or split into two distinct ones.
