Boy was I tired at work today. Early this morning (2 a.m.) I woke up and discovered The Remains of the Day just beginning. That has to be one of most emotional films I've ever seen (even though Anthony Hopkin's character shows nearly no emotion). It's beyond belief that the film won no Oscars. What was also beyond belief was that there were quite a few of my co-workers who have never seen it.

It is truly a wonderful bit of work. Hopkin's performance is so subtle - as always. Watching him is watching a master of the tiniest change in posture or stance, or gaze. Amazing.

I deliberately skipped this one until I read the book....
Then the trailer looked so depressing, with Hopkins a loner
butler type---figured I'd let it go. Still haven't read the script.

A really good movie and an awesome book. The book fleshes out much of what is apparently unsaid in the character of Stevens.
I enjoy watching Hopkins act.

I love that movie. My ex-husband actually alluded to shedding like one tear while watching it. Mind you, I never saw the man cry once in 14 years.

.

The interplay between Hopkin's "Stevens" character and his dad is heartbreaking. Not to mention the dynamic between Emma Thompson and him. And let's not forget Christopher Reeve's small, but impassioned performance as the American diplomat, or was it Senator, I cannot remember.

Reeves was at an event in from of Merchant and Ivories. He turned to them and said, "I'll take any part in your next movie." Their next movie was The Remains of the Day.

Delightful!!!

One of the best movies in the last 20 years!! The photography was accurate and stunning along with superb performances by the entire cast.
Yes,the book was well written. But the movie was just as fine in my humble opinion.

As an aside, A Room With A View doesn't get a lot of respect. I remember liking the film when I saw it years ago, but it is never played on cable, though Remains of the Day often is and Howard's End, another very fine film, is on almost daily. I take that back, it is on daily.

Just a random observation.

Let me be first to agree. A Room With a View is a very watchable film. Helena Bonham Carter was still respectable. And to see Daniel Day Lewis in this film, then in Last of the Mohicans makes you appreciate this man's staggering talent. Judi Dench is wonderful in it, as is one of my favorite character actors, Simon Callow.

A Room With a View is also very quotable, especially the Reverend Beebe and the Miss Allens. I quote it often in fact, and get the predictable blank looks.

And let's not forget the question mark.

BTW, did you know that Simon Callow, one of my favorite character actors as well, is writing a multi-volume biography of Orson Welles? The latest volume Hello Americans about his success after Citizen Kane has just hit the bookstores last month.

Also, see Simon Callow in Four Weddings and a Funeral; he is a high point. He was great in Bright Young Things as well. And let's not forget Ace Ventura II: When Nature Calls. On second though, let's forget that. ;)

I saw this film when I was a teen and it haunted me.

I hunted down the DVD and now I watch it just about every year. And here I thought I was the only one who liked it. Man, NOW I know why I joined this forum! lol

Yes, Remains of the day is one of those films that impressed me a lot. I like the film so much that I once bought the VHS. Hopkins is superb and Emma Thomson too. I am too astonished that the film never won an oskar.

This movie was great, even though Anthony Hopkins didn't show much emotion, he was supurb at letting you know how he was feeling despite of that. Everything was great except the ending....I wanted the him to be with Emma!!!!
