The whole yankee thing is better in more Urban areas (unless you walk into MY house, where my husband IS a Yankee.)

I make fun of it, but I thought they quit doing that years ago to people. My favorite father-in-law (which happens NOT to be my current one) used to tell me all kinds of things that happened to him 30 years ago.

I have to ask, WHERE were you?

(On a side note, I was refused service in a Shari's because I was an NRA member from Texas back when I was in the NW. I've never been sure if it was my prolific use of the word "y'all" or the fact that my purse got dumped.)

A suburb of Louisville, KY. I figured that wasn't in the sticks so I should be safe. :( I was dressed conservatively and did not see it coming. It started with the natural two forms of ID. That turned into about twelve which was everything in my purse, calling my old bank and getting a verbal confirmation over the phone of my status with them (after doing a credit check. I have stellar credit)...people started looking as it was becoming a bit of a circus. A manager was brought over to "check my identification." She came over (A fake blond like everyone else in there) and told me: "We are a careful and conservative bank. We need to protect our customers. We need you to bring in some proof of residency, like a utility bill with your name and address on it. We also need...."

Before I stormed out I asked for a photocopy of the photocopy of all of my IDs they had requested of me. Before I contacted an attorney I called the Bank's corporate office. They said they would look into it and get back to me. They called back and said the report was that I wouldn't show them any ID!

"I have a copy they made of all 12,034 pieces of ID!"

It wasn't worth the effort and I easily opened an account at Bank of America.

Oh, so the Yankee thing was heavily implied. We knew of a local that opened an account there easily with one form of ID and bad credit.

I see the problem. When they asked if you "Had any ID?" you should have responded, "Bout what?"

Would've pegged you as a local right there. :D

First, Louisville Kentucky isn't the south. Kentuckians are not southerners. I 've spent a lot of time in KY and there is no bias to 'yankees' there and even where they say there's bias in the true south I have NEVER seen anything like what you describe in my years here. Maybe 50-60 years ago or longer.

Second it certainly sounds like what they wanted was proof that you lived locally, which you didn't seem to be providing even with all the id's. This is very common practice in banks ALL OVER THE U.S.

So they never once said you are not our kind, you are a yankee and so we will not serve you, did they? You made an assumption due to a pre-conceived prejudice against southerners, or what you thought were southerners, and came with the attitude that I will not like these people.

That kinda stuff doesn't happen here in New Orleans, and I don't know if it EVER did. This has always been a city that derives business from all over the world. Even the arch-conservative Whitney Bank wouldn't pull a stunt like this.

Anything north of the U.S. Highway 190 corridor is Yankee, to me.lol lol lol lol

Oh for heaven's sake. I suspected someone might say that Louisville, KY isn't the south. As for the rest, I've lived in other states having traveled on my own and as a military wife and assure you that this bank was not engaging in "standard practice." Also, one does not need to live in the state to open an account with that bank. But really, you seem closed to accepting that my experience differs from your expectations of what should, did and will occur in THE SOUTH. :)

I reiterate

Oh, and in many states you do have to prove you live there to get a bank account. We live in a scam filled world with electronic money. Banks try and protect their members from such possibilities.

Sounds like they had rules you didn't like them. Good enough, take your money elsewhere

This brings to mind the current lawsuit between six islamic imams and U.S. Airways. They of course were removed from a flight in Minneapolis due to complaints from other fare paying passengers who feared for the safety and their comfort. The airline claims that their behavior was the cause for "refusal of service" and police intervention. The imams claim it was a religious discrimination issue.

Thank goodness that some companies reserve the right to refuse service at their discretion and that the "safety and comfort" of other fare paying customers is paramount over the aberrant behavior of others. A commercial aircraft, boarding, prior to take-off is not the time or place to practice provocative, inciting or annoying behavior.

Some venues just require one to sit down, buckle-in, and shut up. (Just like all the rest of us do!)

You edited after my first reply, so I am responding to this now...

Here on the FL we like to discuss and debate, but we don't attack others. So basically I'm putting you on ignore moving forward, not because I disagree with you, or you me, but because I find your manner disagreeable. :)

What's all this noise? What's this shouting! This is a local bank for local people, we don't like outsiders here!

Obviously you haven't read Flying Scotsman on the children at weddings thread.

Warbird if from Nashville, seems he knows the south a bit, no?

He knows his experience of the south but certainly can't claim to be an expert on mine.

I don't believe I attacked you. Ignore me if you wish, I have never had any problem with you and have nothing against you. I completely disagree with your rationale of this situation. I find zero merit in the accusation.

given the number of Confederate flags in evidence in southern Indiana and in Kentucky, one would imagine there's a significant portion of kentuckians who consider themselves southern (or at least reject the notion that they are northern).

Well, everyone has their jealousies now don't they? Let them think they're from the south if that makes them feel better.;)
