Ok I have bought refrigerators in the past. When we moved into our current home, a year or two later we bought a Maytag side by side 25 cu. ft. fridge, with the ice maker and the water dispenser in the door. Glass shelves, etc. It wasn't cheap, but you know "Maytag, the Dependability People". The "bored" Maytag man on TV....never having to repair .....HAHAHHAHAH:rage: :rage: :rage:

So in the 10 years we have owned it, we had the "defrost heater" fail, the ice maker fail, the thermostat fail, and two ice plug ups. How's that for "dependability"?

We bought a NEW KitchenAid side by side stainless model today, and it looks nice. Energy Star compliant, 25.3 cu. ft., ice maker in the door (gives way more space in the freezer), and it has a filtration system for the water. It comes Thursday, and they will deliver and haul away the old one for free. (BEST BUY).

So, has anyone else out there had "good luck" with your appliance, namely the fridge? Used to last forever, now they say 1o-12 years is the max.

New in Town
When I was in college I had an old Norge that was 30 years old when I bought it at a yard sale. I sold it to a friend when I graduated in 1984. He still uses it as a beer fridge in his garage.

They just don't build them like they used to.

Anyway, I've had good luck with the KitchenAids.

The old timers will go on and on. Freezer space is limited and the rubber seal around the door will deteriorate eventually which will decrease efficiency, but seals are replaceable.

My town is having a free curbside appliance pick up this week and a few blocks away is one of them old ones and I'm tempted to go check it out. My Whirlpool fridge isn't that old, but the darned thing wants to run too cold and freeze food on the shelves and I can't set it any lower.

Well we had a side by side Western Auto brand built by Amana I think that went 33 years! Had the defroster coil thingy fixed/replaced twice too. Got a 25 foot Kenmore last year with water and ice maker. It's OK but the old 25 sq. ft. fridge actually had better space usage in my opinion.[huh]

The Amana my parents bought NEW five years ago is on its last legs, they hate it, and while five people have opened and shut it every day, we don't do bad things to appliances so it really has no excuse for being such a piece of junk. It started breaking off bits within months.:rage:

I've had good results with Kenmore appliances. I have a 25-year-old (more or less) Kenmore microwave. I've had my Kenmore refrigerator for about 6 years and have never had a bit of trouble with it. It looks as good as the day I bought it. The drawers and shelves, both in the door in the body, are removable and fit in the sink for easy washing. You can put them back in at any level you like. The shelves in the door will hold a gallon jug of milk.
