Oh why did they change "Cherries in the Snow" I love that colour !!

I just bought that colour the other day and I really like it - was it more of a red before?

I posted this in a different thread but maybe it's more appropriate here - I was watching Marnie last week and absolutely loved the nail polish Tippi Hedren was wearing - would any of you ladies know any current shades that might be similar to this one (this is the best photo I could get!):

I knew it!!! Grrr...

No wonder my most recent bottle of "Cherries in the Snow" looked more pink than usual! It doesn't look right on me anymore.

If I do a full manicure with 2-3 coats and top coat, I usually get 7-10 days out of Revlon with touchups (but I keep my nails on the shorter side). Some shades last longer, some less. I got 14 days out of Coffee Bean once, but that was pushing it. Vixen's current formulation usually lasts me 7.

As long as it's a good product, I don't care where it comes from. Plus, I enjoy the decadence of having an entire cosmetics department of a 24-hour drugstore to myself late in the evening now and then. (Meditative, and no salespeople to bother you with an upsell.)

fftopic: On an interesting side note, for a long time, Revlon was a department store counter brand sold only in department stores, at a higher markup than the competition. Charles Revson was choosy about where his products were sold, and stores had to be "invited" to carry his products. It pained Revson greatly that changes in the business eventually meant that Revlon was sold "just anywhere." (Source: Fire & Ice by Andrew Tobias. Great book.)

My mother worked the Revlon counter at the Hecht Company department store in Washington, D.C., from about 1965 to 1974. It was a very high end line in the store - and lucky for me, we always had lots of samples in the house - I know it's where my make up addiction began! Thanks for the memory, Dexter's Dame!!

fftopic: Inky, that is one of the coolest things I've heard in a while: your mom sold Revlon when Charles Revson was still alive! (I'm crazy about cosmetics history.) Thank YOU for bringing part of the Fire & Ice book to life! I just finished reading it last week, and your post clarified some dates the book was vague about.

Revson was apparently a strange man, but without his genius, none of us would be wearing opaque nail polish.

I can't recommend Ciate Stiletto enough if you are warm toned (which I am not, it looks awful on me). The formula is great and i love the bottle design.

Stumbled onto this swatching of the upcoming Illamasqua Viridian nail color. Done on Mizz Worthy's blog. Gorgeous iridescent green. Never was tempted to have green nails before, but I gotta try this one.

Noticed this recently: Some CVS drugstores here in Los Angeles carry a small selection of OPI. That may be a local thing or just here and NYC, though--L.A. drugstores often carry higher end products, for the convenience of makeup artists & hairstylists at odd hours. (The CVS I was at was near Warner Bros.)

More vintage Revlon shade names, with the caveat that cosmetics companies are notorious for dusting off old names for reformulated colors (The source for these shade names is Revlon Art of Beauty, which I compared to Revlon.com. Most were originally in nail and lip colors. Some are lip only now, but I include them in case you want to use the lip as a guide to find another nail brand in that exact same shade):

Sphinx Pink (frosted pink available from 1962ish to celebrate Elizabeth Taylor's 1963 Cleopatra look, discontinued in the early 2000's--there still may be some out there), Revlon Red (still avail), Love That Red (still Avail), Raven Red (still avail), Frankly Scarlet (still avail), Cherries in the Snow (shade name is vintage, but color is now a fucshia pink; avail as nail & lip), Fire & Ice (avail in nails and lip).

Other shade names no longer available, but you can look for Revlon ads on Ebay and try to match the shade with another product or brand: Paint the Town Pink, Pink Crystal, Pink Spicing, Naked Pink, Softsilver Pink, Softshell Pink (currently only lip), Love That Pink (currently only lip), Pink in the Afternoon (currently only lip), Silver City Pink (currently only lip), Ming Rose, Coming Up Roses, A Rose is a Rouge, Dragon Red, Shanghai Scarlet, Daring Young Pink (now a lipstick shade called Daring Pink), Daring Young Red,Tawny Red, Fifth Avenue Red, Million Dollar Red, Real Red (now a Matte lipstick shade called Really Red), Red Hot Red, On the Town Red, Certainly Red (currently only lip), Stormy Pink (Discontinued long ago but now a Revlon Matte lipstick shade).

Also, as happens with most cosmetics companies, I saw several 2010 shades on the Revlon site that looked nearly identical to some of their vintage shades, but with 2010 names.

Using one of the above methods I've nearly always been able to match whatever vintage color I'm looking for. Some brand, somewhere has it; it just takes a little patience.

For the 40's look, I've been sticking with OPI's Thrill of Brazil! It matches very well with MAC's Ruby Woo lipstick and it works for all seasons!

I went on a hunt for the perfect Barbie pink nail polish, since I plan on turning into Barbie this summer, and matching is everything. To my delight, Mavala has a new shade called Vegas Pink that fits the bill! My inner Barbie is pleased.
