Rebellion of time ?

I have noticed in my own life the incredible time constraints placed upon me by job, family, etc. I have also noticed that in several areas I have deliberately decided to do activities that require more time to do. For example I have started "wet shaving" again which requires a few extra minutes each morning that I enjoy just for myself. Also, the luxury of fountain pens, forcing me to slow down and write better. Am I alone in rebelling against the ever-increasing rush of today's society?

Part of the reason we are moving to Arkansas is to shift down towards retirement.
Honey has traveled all over the world with his job and I have got to go some with him.
It is great but it does not give much in the way of consistency. About the time you start a project it is time to go again. Out of the blue I believe because of prayer he was offered a job. We took it.
We seriously want more of a simple life. Chickens, garden, piddling etc. My honey loves to do woodworking and is good at it. He is extremely mechanical as well. If all goes according to plan I hope to have builtins everywhere.
Window seats, shelves, etc.
A huge change for us at our age but we are either brave or have lost our minds. Time is precious I have learned. Alot more precious than stuff I have learned. My family thinks we are nuts and have lost our minds. lol
I want to sit in my backyard and watch the birds with my honey or sit and watch him do woodworking. He loves me to do that.

FFG, I. too, have noticed my priorities changing as I've aged. Good luck to you both on your relocation! Sounds like you ned to have hubby start making fountain pen racks on the side!

I actually take advantage of time savers (quick meals, email, paying bills online, etc.) to give myself more free time to do what I really want. So in essence, I guess that's a bit opposite of what you do. :)

I have such a rigid time schedule as it is with the 8-5 job, commuting, taking the kids to school, housework, etc., that I try and squeeze as much time out of the day as possible.

In a nutshell, I hate it. I long to downsize my life - the 8-5 grind really gets to me. I would love to spend more time cooking, gardening, working on crafts, etc., but that darn paycheck gets in the way.

I am trying to move to that lifestyle, of just working part-time, but not sure when I'll be able to do it.

Several years ago as I entered middle age(I'm 45)it became a goal of my wife and I to slow down and to leave modern society and its seeming demand to be constantly on the go.This is what led to our interest in a more vintage lifestyle. We certainly don't live in the past but we do borrow heavily.

Deacon, I do it, too. I've got work, school, and family; but in the mornings I take the time to do my hair (rolls and/or curls), put together a vintage/vintage-inspired outfit, and almost always seamed stockings. (When a person is trying to be on time for carpool, every two minutes counts!)

That's definitely one reason why I college is so much better than highschool (and working in general).

I only spend maybe 12 hours a week in class. The rest is completely up to me. That gives me time to run the tea club, enjoy a bowl of tobacco on Wednesday nights with the cigar and pipe club, write for the school paper, stroll on the mall just because the weather is so enjoyable - the list goes on.

To utterly rip off Office Space, if I had enough money so I didn't have to worry about my well being, I would do nothing. The fast pace of today's society is what really gets me sick. I really don't mind working hard for something I believe in, but I just cannot see myself in the 8-5 grind (at least happily).

*EDIT* Oh, and fountain pens shouldn't impede your speed. In fact, a well tuned FP should increase the rate at which one moves one's hand across the page

I'm in college and I wish I only had 12 hours of class a week! I'm an art major, so as of right now I have 20 hours of scheduled class a week, plus 14 hours of work, not including studio time and other personal time spent working on my projects.

I would love to just be able to come home at a reasonable hour and nap for a bit. By the time I get home it's 7 PM, no time to nap, and I have a roommate, so I can't go to bed very early.

Okay, enough of me complaining, but I would love for the world to slow down just a little bit!

Your not alone

When it comes to traditional wet shaving, there is no better way to do it.It is by far better for your mug, double edge blades are cheaper,(priceless in the quality shave they provide).Haveing a brush and a puck of soap in a mug also, for me,takes me back to when my dad told me how to shave. It's something you can pass down to your own son,by handing him a traditional double edge razor, brush and a mug with your favorite soap puck.It keeps us intouch with our past and something we can pass forward.

MWF I have three classes totaling to 9 hours
TuTh I have two classes totaling to 4 hours

13 hours or so.

I do work 11 hours a week, but it consists of sitting in a computer lab and doing homework.

Right now it looks as if I'm a Classics major, and I really don't have *that* much homework. May two hours tops a night. Even with two foreign languages (Greek and Latin), it's very manageable.

Looks like I found the right major :D

Is it wrong that I want that too, and I'm only in my late twenties? I'd be the one doing the woodworking though!!

As Frank Sinatra said, I just want to earn a dollar more than I need. My father also has quite a good benchmark (particularly apt at the moment): he just wants to be able to fill the tank in the car without wondering where the money's going to come from to pay for it.

I sure don't see it as wrong, Max. You are seeing now what you want in life and making the adjustments you need to. Good luck! It seems to me that time seems to be about out priorities and what things are the truly important areas in our lives.

I saw an interesting experiment on one of the science channel programs recently. The host of the program stopped folks on the street at random and asked them to estimate how long a minute was. Most used the standard trick of counting 1 - 1 thousand, 2- 1 thousand or some variant thereof.

The result was that younger people overestimated the elapsed time, and older people underrestimated the elapsed time. It seems that time actually does speed up for us as we age. I know for me, no matter how hard I try to slow down, the weeks, months, and years fly by at an accellerating rate.

I've resumed bicycling after several years' hiatus (spun out and broke a shoulder on a trail). My mostly flat and well-bike-pathed town invites it, and I actually need no more time to commute to class than I do by car - no more spot searching or long walks to or from lots.

I was back in NYC last week on business and I realized why I felt so spiritually drained there so often. You must constantly share your time, as well as your space, with strangers in an impersonal way. It gets into your soul. I was rebelling subtly for years before I left, but sometimes (rush hour, say) it's just rude to do so. Time and space are that precious.

I blame:

Cell phones and personal electronic devices.

So many people rush around on the cell phone all the time! People today have the hardest time staying off the telephone... so much that they had to make laws banning hand held sets in cars! And if it's not talking, it's TEXTING! I mean, what's the point of that? Typing to people you know when you can just talk to them? I think it's annoying personally also; it's really setting in that wedge of making communication more impersonal. Oh, I'll just text them, don't need to talk to them... I mean, where do people come with that stuff? I do see if one doesn’t answer the phone, texting can be good but, all the time? Come now!

Ever notice if you're bored, the time seems to just creep by? Then a friend calls or comes over and then you're talking then the time just seems to fly? Well, there ya go! Stay off the phone more often! Then you'll slow things down! ;)

I don't own any modern small personal electric trinkets... Cell phone, black berry, ect... just my PC and that's enough for me.

Also, driving a slower car helps! lol

I dont think it just about slowing down, but knowing your priorities and when to rush and when to just not rush.

I often think of waiting in line. People get so frustrated waiting in line. If the checker is working, other lanes are open, and there are TONS of people, you are just gonna have to wait in line! Its not the end of the world! And stop creeping closer to me. Just because your 2" closer to me will not make your waiting in line any faster. Personal space!!!!

Walking is another. When I have a destination, A to B, I like to get there fast, so I walk accordingly, but if Im walking the pooch, Ill stroll, look at the sky and people, and let the dog sniff her way to happiness.

People dont like or know how to fill their waiting time with other things because people are not taught to do that anymore. Its all now now now.

Now I need a nap.

I felt exactly the same way when I worked in retail. I need a lot of personal time and space anyway, so maybe it got to me quicker. I would go home and not even interact with my family - just sit in a corner and be silent.

i've been seriously looking at getting a pager...the only problem is the lack of pay phones nowadays...i figured out i would have to wait until i got an office and house with a phone so i would at least have two places with a landline...but i think a pager could make life a little simpler...i dunno...
