Real McCoy Harley repro re-dye with Saphir

Hello,

I’ve got a Real McCoy horsehide jacket I bought second hand and further beat to all hell. I’m thinking of applying some mustang paste to dry before using Saphir Medaille D’or to make it shine. I’m open to opinions on not doing it all or product replacement, just hoping for some guidance on avoiding pitfalls on my favorite jacket.

Thanks y’all!

Personally ,I’m a lover of a jacket that has “history.” This thing looks like it has great stories and character. Even a bit of bad-ass-ness. I’d soften it up a bit, and wear the heck out of it! I like Bickmore Bick 4 as a mild conditioner. It’s kinda like a light shampoo consistency, soaks in well, and leaves a nice soft, non-waxy finish. I think it would really darken the black without leaving a shine, and soak right into those dry looking highlights where the surface has rubbed off, and make it soft and refreshed. Sometimes I get so anxious for something new, I forget to appreciate how cool something I already have is. This is an authentically “distressed’ jacket. That can’t be faked, but is often tried by manufacturers. In my opinion, it’s kind of a gem.

I think you know where I stand on this one… But you gotta do you! Whatever makes you love your jacket, that’s what matters most. Good luck.

I agree, but at the same time I did it anyway. I figured it’d get beat back to shit in no time anyway. It’s dried some and it looks like the dye didn’t completely soak in, so there’s still a good amount of age showing. I’ll post pictures tomorrow.

Didn’t get all the angles, but sufficed to say I’m very happy with how it turned out. Shined the nickel buttons and they look great. It didn’t reset it to new, but it gave the exposed tea core a darker tone that blends well and will no doubt wear more quickly. I was really impressed by the mustang paste. Really softened and smoothed the leather. Recommend to anyone to beat some life into a beater.

I would first clean it by brushing it with a shoe brush. I then will be us using saddle soap. Furthermore, I will do two or three saddle soap cleaning before I would condition it. I just cleaned one of my jackets after a 600-mile bike ride. The jacket was full of smoke and dirt from the road. I make my own conditioner. I shared my formula in this forum for anyone who wish it to duplicate. Many conditioners share the similar ingredient when they make their product. Lastly, most conditioners use beef fat (tallow/manteca de res) in their formulas. Baseline is also good.
